Jesus Colome spent 10 seasons in the big leagues with four different clubs, primarily carving out a role in the Rays bullpen from 2001-06. Now his son, Johenssy, is prepared to enter the professional ranks as one of the most tooled-up members of the ‘26 international class, one who has the look of a potential impact big leaguer if everything comes together. Colome counts former MLB reliever Alex Colome as his cousin, while two of his uncles on his mom’s side were also top Minor League prospects. Growing up in a tough and loving baseball family has helped prepare Colome for the rigors of pro ball.

It’s not often that teenage prospects launch home runs. But Colome has a tendency to get to that jumpy pop with frequency, consistently leveraging his swing well – so well in fact, that one evaluator mentioned the most recent occasion on which he saw an international prospect continually get to their launch point in such a manner was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Colome is a right-handed hitter with explosive hands and a solid contact rate, although he has been known to be a tad aggressive in the box as a means of getting to said power. 

Something of an athletic marvel at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds at age 16, Colome is an agile athlete who shows a lot of lateral quickness. The fluidity of his movements and strong arm led to a Manny Machado comparison being hung on him defensively. Much like the seven-time All-Star, Colome may move off short as his frame fills out, but he’s a tremendously dedicated worker and has the feet, soft hands and instincts to stick at the premium position.

The No. 5 prospect during the 2026 international signing period, Colome signed with the A’s out of the Dominican Republic for $4 million. He’s the latest member of the Colome family legacy joining the professional baseball ranks, following the footsteps of his father, Jesus Colome, who spent 10 big league seasons as a reliever with four different clubs from 2001-10. Johenssy is also the cousin of former MLB reliever Alex Colome. On his mother’s side, two of his uncles were top Minor League prospects, providing plenty of family support as he prepares for the journey of playing baseball at the highest of levels.

Colome has added a good amount of size to his 6-foot-2 frame and has improved a lot since the time the A’s first scouted him around the age of 15 in the D.R. His explosive hands lead to a bevy of home runs, which is quite impressive for a teenager. Though he is aggressive in the box to get to that power, he has shown a solid contact rate with a consistent swing that allows him to routinely barrel the ball up.

There is no shortage of excitement within the A’s organization surrounding Colome, who appears to be an agile athlete with good lateral quickness in the early stages of his career. Defensively, his strong arm and fluid movements have led to some Manny Machado comparisons. Because he is still growing into his body, there is a chance that Colome eventually moves off short, but the combination of footwork, smooth hands and instincts should give him a strong opportunity to stick at the position as he gets his pro career underway.
