Johnson missed almost all of his 2024 Mississippi high school senior season while recovering from internal brace surgery before staying local to pitch at Pearl River (Miss.) CC. In his lone season with the Wildcats, he tied a school record with 12 wins while posting a 2.28 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 71 innings. The Rangers paid him a double-slot $300,000 bonus in the 11th round last July to divert him from attending Auburn.

Johnson's fastball sat at 89-90 mph at the end of his high school career before parking at 90-93 mph and touching 96 last spring, generating a lot of grounders with its heavy sink and armside run. He backs his heater up with a tight low-80s slider that he can land for strikes or use to create chases. He barely uses his mid-80s changeup with fade but controls it well.

With Johnson's long, whippy arm action and ultraprojectable 6-foot-3 frame, Texas believes more velocity gains are in his future. He's athletic and moves down the mound well, creating deception with extension and a low arm slot and release height. He'll be just 19 at the start of the 2026 season, so the Rangers will be patient with his development.
