Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 50 | Splitter: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

The Rangers saved international bonus pool money to pursue Roki Sasaki in 2025, and when he signed with the Dodgers, they pivoted and spent $1,200,001 on Kim in May. A two-way standout who projected to go in the first round of the Korea Baseball Organization draft, he played briefly in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League after signing before returning home to complete his high school education. After getting his diploma in January, he'll both play shortstop and pitch in his U.S. debut this year.

Scouts are divided as to whether Kim is better as a position player or pitcher. He projects as an average hitter with a good approach and 15-homer power from the right side of the plate, and he could raise his offensive ceiling as he adds strength to his projectable 6-foot-2 frame. He's a solid defender at shortstop with a strong arm and average speed.

On the mound, Kim displays a low-90s fastball that reaches 95 mph. He has a full complement of secondary pitches, with his low-80s slider ranking ahead of his mid-80s splitter and mid-70s curveball. He should add more power as he matures physically and his athleticism should help him throw strikes.

The Rangers committed international bonus pool money to the pursuit of Roki Sasaki, leaving them with money to spend after Sasaki signed with the Dodgers. Texas invested some of that cash in a $1,200,001 bonus for Kim, landing the Korean high school two-way standout in May. He'll make his pro debut this summer and will get the opportunity to both pitch and play shortstop, though the Rangers may simplify things by having him wait until instructional league before taking the mound.

Scouts are split as to whether Kim's future is brighter as a pitcher or as a position player. He operates with a low-90s fastball that tops out at 95 and shows good feel for a low-80s slider and a mid-80s splitter. He'll mix in a mid-70s curveball as a fourth offering and his athleticism should translate into strike-throwing.

Kim projects as an average hitter with 15-homer power and has room to add strength to his 6-foot-2 frame, which could raise his offensive ceiling. He should stick at shortstop and become at least a solid defender with plus arm strength. He possesses average speed.
