The state of Delaware hasn’t had a player drafted in the top 10 rounds since 2013 and hasn’t seen a high schooler go that high since the year before that. Mitchell started creating some buzz this spring after performing on the showcase circuit at events like the Area Code Games and Perfect Game’s WWBA World Championship, earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the First State. Hailing from the same high school that produced current A’s infielder Zack Gelof, Mitchell has the chance to break Delaware’s top 10-round drought.
Mitchell is a strong and physical catcher, standing at 6-foot-3. He’s a left-handed hitter, something teams love from their backstops, and he has the chance to do damage at the plate. He has plus raw power and can get to it at times, though he sometimes sells out for it, working too hard to add loft to his swing, ending up out in front as a result.
A quintessential power-bat, power-arm type, Mitchell has plenty of arm strength behind the plate, though there’s work to be done on consistency and on his overall receiving. That’s something that often gets called into question with catchers this size, though most feel he should be adequate defensively long-term. Any team trying to sign him away from his commitment to head to the SEC and play for Kentucky, though, will be buying the bat and the power potential.

Gatorade's 2025 Delaware high school player of the year, Mitchell won a state championship at Cape Henlopen HS (Lewes), a program that has produced big leaguers Mason Fluharty and Zack Gelof. The Astros drafted him in the seventh round, making him the state's highest selection since 2012 Rangers second-rounder Jamie Jarmon. Mitchell signed for $797,500, tripling his slot value and breaking Jarmon's Delaware record of $601,500.
More physical than most high schoolers at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Mitchell features plus raw power. He needs to learn to let that pop come naturally rather than hunting home runs, which leads to his left-handed stroke getting too long and uphill. He hits balls hard but doesn't have much experience facing quality pitching, so he'll have to prove that he can hit premium velocity and breaking pitches.
As a catcher, Mitchell stands out most with solid arm strength that will play better once he improves his footwork. He needs to clean up his receiving and blocking and may need some time to adjust to handling pro pitchers. He's a below-average runner but not bad for his position.

Delaware went 11 Drafts without having a player drafted in the first 10 rounds until the Astros popped Mitchell in the seventh round in July. Gatorade's Delaware High School Player of the Year, he led Cape Henlopen HS (Lewes) to the state championship. His $797,500 bonus tripled the assigned value for his slot and set a record for his state.
A physical 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, Mitchell offers plus raw power from the left side of the plate. He can get too aggressive and sell out for home runs, which results in his swing getting too long and uphill. He’ll need to tone down his approach against pro pitching and let his pop come naturally.
Mitchell's best attribute behind the plate is his solid arm strength, which will play more consistently once he improves his footwork. He needs to clean up his receiving and blocking as well, though he should be able to remain behind the plate. He's a below-average runner but not bad for a catcher.
