A Padres eighth-round pick out of Middle Tennessee State in 1998, Jeremy Owens was a speedster who played 10 seasons in the Minors and another eight in the independent Atlantic League. His son Josh has similar tools but more offensive upside. He won two games on the mound and also played some left field for the U.S. national team that earned a gold medal at the 18-and-under World Cup qualifier in Panama last August.
Owens presently is a hit-over-power guy but should have more pop as he fills out his projectable 6-foot-3 frame. He'll flash the ability to drive balls in the air with his left-handed stroke and should do so more frequently as he gets stronger. For now, he focuses on making contact with a calm setup and a slight crouch at the plate.
Owens features plus-plus speed and uses it to get on base and create havoc when he does. Though the Georgia Southern recruit has good actions and a strong arm at shortstop, he might have more defensive impact at the next level as a center fielder with plenty of range. He can run his fastball up to 92 mph on the mound but has a relieverish delivery and more upside as a position player.

The son of speedster Jeremy Owens, who stole 399 bases in 18 years between the Minors and independent ball, Josh has a similar offensive profile -- but also a potential future on the mound. He won two games as a pitcher and also played some left field for the U.S. national team that earned a gold medal at the 18-and-under World Cup qualifier in Panama in 2024. Hailing from the same part of Tennessee where the Rangers found Evan Carter, Owens will get the chance to play both ways after signing for an over-slot $1.1 million in the third round last July.
Most clubs preferred Owens as a position player with plus speed and the chance to grow into comparable raw power. While he has some natural loft in his left-handed swing that allows him to drive balls in the air, he got too aggressive and pull-happy in his brief debut, striking out 11 times in 24 at-bats. He offers good actions and a strong arm at shortstop, though some amateur scouts believed he'd have more defensive impact in center field.
Owens has a relieverish delivery that makes him look like a shortstop throwing sidearm, but it creates an extremely low release height and life on his pitches without hurting his ability to provide strikes. During instructional league, he worked at 93-96 mph and touched 98 with heavy sink on a two-seam fastball and in the low 80s with promising sweep on his slider. He also imparts sink on an upper-80s changeup that's a work in progress.
