The top acquisition for the Angels in the 2025 international market was the highest-ranked catcher in the class, Gabriel Davalillo. But the organization was also jazzed to get De Paula, a shortstop from Santo Domingo, for $900,000. He got off to a hot start on offense, one that was equally as encouraging as Davailillo’s, in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .387/.525/.484 over his first 10 games. But his debut ended when he hurt his left shoulder diving for a ball on defense.
The Angels are excited to see what a healthy De Paula can do stateside. He’s shown an early penchant for contact, with solid knowledge of the strike zone, limiting strikeouts and taking some walks. He’s a switch-hitter with some ability to drive the ball, though it’s a hit-over-power profile.
De Paula runs well and can steal a base, and that athleticism will help him stay up the middle defensively. He has the chance to be a plus defender at shortstop in the future, one with a table-setter type of offensive profile. He might be a half step ahead of 2026 international signee Jeyson Horton for now, and it will be interesting to see which one of them sticks at the premium position and which one slides over to the keystone, a competition the Angels won’t have to worry about for a while.
