The track record of right-handed-hitting high school catchers in the Draft has not been a particularly good one, with as many (if not more) misses than hits. Perhaps the most recent success story is Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, a first-rounder a decade ago. Harvey is another tall, strong prep backstop who, while not expected to go as early as Stephenson, has excited Florida scouts about his all-around abilities in a class not deep in catching.
Strong and powerful, Harvey has shown off some excellent offensive skills in high school and on the summer showcase circuit. He has tremendous raw power that he's shown he can get to in games. While he’s power-over-hit, there’s a split camp over just how big the disparity is. Some have seen a player with an excellent approach who can drive the ball the other way, while others have seen him pull the ball hard but struggle with pitches down in the zone because of a stiff setup. He doesn’t swing-and-miss much, which does bode well for him getting to his power in the future.
Harvey has every chance to stick behind the plate, with good hands and solid receiving skills. He moves well, especially for his size. He has excellent arm strength but might need to clean up his throwing mechanics to get to all of it consistently. The fact he’ll be 19 at the time of the Draft might bounce him from some team models, meaning he would be eligible again in two years as a sophomore at Florida State if he doesn’t sign this year.

Righty-hitting catchers can be fighting an uphill battle in terms of Draft status, and you have to go back to Reds backstop Tyler Stephenson from the 2015 class to get a player in that profile who's found good MLB success. (Harry Ford, of the 2021 class, could join that list in time.) Like Stephenson, Harvey showed out in front of southeast scouts – this time coming from the Florida ranks – and he was ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 153 prospect in the 2025 Draft. The Padres took him right around that slot in the fifth round but gave him their second-highest bonus at $1.5 million to sign away from a Florida State commitment.
Harvey has strength and power in his 6-foot-2 frame and continually showed that off in high school, summer showcases and the Draft Combine. At the latter event, he hit three balls at 400-plus feet, tied for the most on Day 2 and maxed out with an exit velocity of 110.5 mph. Scouts were split on whether he would have the hit tool to get to that pop before the Draft, and Harvey’s limited contact in a short seven-game sample with Single-A Lake Elsinore didn’t help the cause. In that time however, he didn’t expand the zone much, and there’s hope the dip in the California League could open him to adjustments in his first full season.
Harvey’s good hands and receiving skills will get him plenty of looks behind the plate, and his above-average arm strength fortifies the case, especially if he can clean up some of his mechanics. The Padres took fellow prep backstop Truitt Madonna in the Draft last year and will have to balance the workloads for both, but Harvey has more upside with his slugging advantage.

The Padres have talked about giving him and fellow catcher/2025 pick Truitt Madonna work around the diamond as they try to get both players reps behind and at the plate in the lower Minors.
