Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

After starting his college career at Southern Mississippi as a two-way player in 2023, Monistere focused on hitting and played six different positions as a sophomore. He became a full-time second baseman in 2025 and won Sun Belt Conference player of the year honors after slashing .323/.410/.623 with a league-best 21 homers. The Astros made him a fourth-round pick because they liked his athleticism and versatility, though he looked less refined than expected on both sides of the ball during his introduction to pro ball.

Monistere uses an aggressive right-handed swing to produce high exit velocities, though he needs to tone down his approach. He rolls over on too many fastballs and comes up empty while chasing too many breaking balls and changeups. His solid-to-plus raw power could translate into 20 homers per season if he can become more selective and less pull happy.

Monistere features average quickness and solid arm strength that produced fastballs up to 94 mph when he pitched as a freshman. The game sped up on him when he spent most of his pro debut at shortstop and third base, and he began 2026 by mainly playing second base. That's his best position and he projects as an average defender there.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Monistere began his college career at Southern Mississippi as a two-way player in 2023 before focusing on hitting and playing six different positions as a sophomore. After the Golden Eagles made him a full-time second baseman this spring, he won Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year accolades after batting .323/.410/.623 and leading the league with 21 homers. The Astros signed him for an under-slot $397,500 in the fourth round and sent him to Single-A.

Monistere is an aggressive right-handed hitter who produces higher exit velocities than the typical second baseman. He possesses solid-to-plus raw power that should translate into 20 homers per season in pro ball, perhaps more if he can curb a tendency to generate ground-ball contact. He rarely uses the opposite field and has difficulty staying back on changeups, two weaknesses that more advanced pitchers will try to exploit.

A fringy-to-average runner, Monistere offers similar defense at second base, his best position. When he pitched as a freshman, his fastball clocked as high as 94 mph, and his solid arm strength is an asset on defense. He lacks the quickness to play shortstop in the big leagues, but he could handle third base or the outfield corners.
