Rodriguez, who spent some time in the U.S. in the Philadelphia area as a kid, signed with the Cardinals for $300,000 in April 2024, and two years later, the Dominican Republic native has become one of the best prospects in his international class and one of the best catching prospects in all of baseball. After a standout Dominican Summer League debut campaign in which he slugged .683 and posted a 1.145 OPS in 41 games, he continued his rise stateside in 2025 with a .276/.399/.555 line in 84 games across the Rookie-level Florida Complex League, Single-A Palm Beach and High-A Peoria. His 20 homers were tied for seventh-most among all Minor League catchers, despite coming in only 368 plate appearances.
Standing stout at 5-foot-10, Rodriguez packs a punch from the right side. He doesn’t need much lower-half movement to get firing, relying on his strength and bat speed to punish baseballs with consistency. Not only does he hit the ball hard for his age (104.2 mph 90th-percentile exit velocity at Single-A), but he also elevates and pulls the ball regularly, leading to high homer totals and slugging percentages. His eyes can light up against fastballs, leading to some chase against heat, but he makes enough hard contact and keeps from biting more often on softer stuff to balance it out for what should be at least an above-average offensive profile.
Like many young backstops, Rodriguez still has a ways to go on the defensive side, especially when it comes to framing. But he can get balls out quickly and accurately and has thrown out at least 30 percent of attempted basestealers in each of his first two full seasons. The Cardinals may run him out on the infield to test out his athleticism and see if there’s a path for his already quick-moving bat.

Rodriguez signed for $300,000 out of the Dominican Republic in April 2024, and two months later, he was one of the most dominant hitters in the Dominican Summer League. His 25 extra-base hits over 41 games were tied for the most on the international complex circuit, while his 10 homers tied for fourth. He finished among the top four qualifiers in average (.345) and slugging percentage (.683), and his 1.145 OPS was the highest by a qualified DSL catcher since at least 2006. Rodriguez was a DSL midseason and end-of-season All-Star and won Player of the Month honors in July.
Standing at a stout 5-foot-10, Rodriguez packs a significant punch from the right side of the box. He hits the ball hard with exit velocities up to 112 mph in early spring workout settings, and at this early stage in his career, he shows the right blend of lift and pull to get the most of that pop in games. He shows a typical catcher’s eye with more walks than strikeouts in the DSL, where pitchers are prone to be wild early in their careers, but he should face tougher tests, especially against breaking stuff, as he comes stateside.
Rodriguez will be a work in progress behind the plate as his glovework catches up to his bat. He threw out 32.4 percent of attempted basestealers in 2024, but evaluators question how his arm strength will play at higher levels. But at 18 years old, he entered the 2025 season as the same age as an American high-school senior, and some believe if he showed this skill set in a prep environment, he’d be a first-round talent at a premium position. His quick dominance of the Florida Complex League and early move to Single-A ball have added tons of fuel to Rodriguez's hype train.

Rodriguez may have signed for $300,000 out of the Dominican Republic back in April, but by the time Dominican Summer League play began two months later, he was already looking like a potentially major addition as part of St. Louis’ 2024 international class. The 17-year-old backstop was named a DSL midseason All-Star in late July and won the circuit’s Player of the Month Award the same month after he slashed .404/.492/.962 with eight homers in 15 games. By Aug. 9, he had collected 10 total homers in the circuit; no other catcher in the DSL had hit more than four.
It’s that power that has caught the attention of many in the St. Louis organization and across the industry. Measuring in at 5-foot-10, Rodriguez isn’t a commanding presence in the box, but he has shown the right blend of strength, lift and ability to pull the ball to get his ample raw power to play in games at such a young age. While he’s walked more than he’s struck out against DSL arms in the early going, he still faces some questions how he’ll handle the secondaries of more advanced pitchers when he heads stateside.
The bat is going to be the carrying tool for Rodriguez because he’s still very much a work-in-progress behind the plate, and his development back there could be an early deciding factor in how aggressive St. Louis is willing to get. Leonardo Bernal jumped from the DSL straight to Single-A in 2022 but was more advanced defensively. The Cardinals might be willing to be more patient and let Rodriguez become a more well-rounded player before they give his power bigger tests.
