Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45
Originally trained as an outfielder in Venezuela, Cayama didn't attract much scouting interest until he shifted to the mound and quickly began reaching the low 90s with his fastball. After signing for $147,500 in 2024, he had to overcome a bout with pneumonia before working in short stints in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He earned Rookie-level Arizona Complex League All-Star honors in his U.S. debut after leading the circuit in average-against (.191), WHIP (1.06) and strikeout rate (28 percent), then made a Single-A cameo at age 18.
Cayama has more feel than most teenage pitchers, showing the ability to work up and down with his fastballs and throw his two secondary offerings with horizontal action in opposite directions. He rides four-seamers up in the zone and sinks two-seamers at the knees while working at 92-94 mph and touching 97 with his heaters. His solid low-80s slider has tight spin and breaks away from righties, while his mid-80s changeup fades and sinks toward them.
Cayama uses his athleticism to repeat his three-quarters delivery and provide regular strikes. His control and fastball command weren't as sharp as usual when he got rocked at Single-A, though that was more a matter of fatigue than a long-term concern. He's not very physical but has the stuff and polish to succeed as a starter.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45
Cayama didn't attract much interest as an outfielder in Venezuela, but he started drawing scouts once he moved to the mound and quickly flashed a low-90s fastball. Signed for $147,500 in 2024, he had his pro debut delayed by pneumonia before bouncing back to post a 2.59 ERA in 10 short starts in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. Back at full strength, he has been even more impressive in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League this spring.
Cayama already parks at 92-94 mph and touches 97 with his fastball at age 18, riding four-seamers up in the zone and sinking two-seamers down at the knees. He backs up his heaters with a tight low-80s slider that shows the potential to become a solid offering. He also displays some feel for a mid-80s changeup with some fade and sink.
More athletic than physical, Cayama repeats his three-quarters delivery more consistently than most teenagers and provides repeated strikes. While he's not as big as a prototypical starter, he has the stuff and control to succeed in that role. He's one of the more advanced young arms in the system.
