Rodriguez stood out as a teenager for a high baseball IQ befitting a player whose father, Jose, is a scout for the Brewers in their home country of Venezuela. Gabriel signed with the Guardians for $500,000 in 2024 and carried his amateur success over to his pro debut, where he posted a .904 OPS in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He played well in his stateside debut in the Arizona Complex League (.795 OPS) last year but only played 28 games between a hamstring injury and extra time in the weight room.
Rodriguez, who was born in Florida, is taller than most Guardians infield prospects and continuing to grow. He signed with the team at 6-foot, 145 pounds, and has already grown an inch and added 25 pounds. Rodriguez does not yet hit for much power but has plenty of projectability in his lanky frame. He shows traits for an above-average hit tool with a pretty left-handed swing geared for low contact, good barrel feel and a discerning eye.
Although the Guardians have played him at short, third and second, Rodriguez projects as at least an average shortstop, where his instincts and hands stand out, and his speed and arm strength are above-average. Added impact at the plate will determine his ceiling, but his impressive defense for his age gives him a solid floor.

Born in Florida, Rodriguez grew up in Venezuela, where his father Jose scouts for the Brewers. As an amateur, he impressed with his performance against high-level competition (he batted .400 without a strikeout in 23 plate appearances at a 15-and-under World Cup qualifier in 2022) and the high baseball IQ he developed while being raised around the game. Signed for $500,000 in 2024, he ranked second in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League with a .506 on-base percentage in his pro debut.
Rodriguez recognizes pitches and makes better swing decisions than most players his age. A left-handed hitter, he uses the entire field well and shows some aptitude for pulling pitches and lifting them in the air. His bat-to-ball skills could translate into 20 homers per season once he fills out his lean 6-foot-frame.
Rodriguez's instincts help him play quicker than his average speed on the bases and in the middle infield. More sure-handed than spectacular at shortstop, he committed just two errors in 26 games there last summer. He also saw action at second base, which may be a better long-term fit for his average range and arm strength, and has gotten some time at third base in 2025.
