Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

While the Pirates gave out a pair of seven-figure bonuses to two Top 50 international prospects right after the 2024 signing period opened, it's been Florentino, who signed for $395,000, who has jumped to the fore as the best prospect from the class. After a solid debut in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, he began making noise right away in extended spring training during his first stint in the United States, then hit his way from the Florida Complex League to full-season ball at age 18.

A left-handed hitter, Florentino continues to fill out his 6-foot-4 frame, adding more muscle this offseason. He's already doing a lot of damage with a solid overall approach. He drew walks, kept his strikeouts in check and limited his chase rate as he advanced in 2025. His combination of strength, exit velocities and bat path enable him to elevate easily, which in turn should help him get to excellent launch angles consistently and access his raw power more, and many think he's still only scratching the surface with how hard he can barrel the ball.

It's not just his offense that the Pirates are excited about. When he first joined the organization, there was fear he'd be forced into being a first baseman only. But he's worked incredibly hard on his conditioning -- he swiped 35 bases in 83 games last year -- and his outfield play, and there's now confidence he can play center field at a very high level with solid reads and routes.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

The Pirates handed out 14 bonuses of six figures or higher in the 2024 international signing period. Florentino and his $395,000 bonus was right in the middle of the pack. Like most signees these days after joining an organization in 2024, the big left-handed hitter made his debut in the Dominican Summer League and showed off some surprisingly advanced skills right out of the gate.

The Pirates hope that Florentino will fill out his 6-foot-4 frame and learn to be an impact hitter as he moves through the system. It looks like he has a pretty good foundation already, with excellent bat speed and the ability to make a lot of impact, especially given his age. He doesn't miss fastballs, evaluators like his swing that already features some loft and he makes good swing decisions. Florentino walked more than he struck out during his debut, showing solid strike-zone judgement, and that continued as he made his way from the Florida Complex League to full-season ball in 2025.

Long and lanky, Florentino is a better runner underway but has better than expected speed. He saw time in all three outfield spots and at first base during his debut, and while there were concerns he would fill out and slow down enough that a corner outfield post or first would be his only options, he's playing a lot of center field and looked better than than expected, giving him a chance to stick up the middle. He gets very high marks for his work ethic and character as he comes stateside at age 18.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The Pirates gave out a pair of seven-figure bonuses at the start of the 2024 international signing period to outfielder Brayln Brazoban and infielder Adbiel Feliz. Florentino, a big left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic, was among several prospects who received six figures, getting $395,000 to join the organization. He made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League this year.

Florentino has the chance to be huge presence in the left-handed batter's box, especially as he fills out his 6-foot-4 frame. Still only 17, he has tremendous raw power to continue to tap into, and he's shown some ability to get to it already with the kind of launch-angle swing that plays very well in team models. There's some confidence that will continue because he's shown early acumen for knowing the strike zone, drawing walks and limiting strikeouts.

Right now, Florentino has split time between the outfield and first base. The hope is he can stay athletic enough to play an outfield corner regularly, though he might end up being limited to first base, with the hope that he develops the kind of power to profile in either spot.
