The Angels may have found a real sleeper in Quintero, whom they signed at the start of the 2024 international signing period for just $25,000 out of Panama. He immediately established himself as one of the best catch-and-throw backstops in the system, first in the Dominican Summer League after signing in a year truncated by a broken hamate, and then when he came stateside in 2025, helping the Angels win the Arizona Complex League championship. Following that, he moved up to Single-A Inland Empire to play a part in the 66ers’ playoff run.

Quintero is always going to lead with his glove. Compact at 5-foot-8, he’s agile behind the dish with excellent receiving and blocking skills. His arm is at least plus, using its strength and accuracy to throw out 49 percent of potential basestealers across both stops in 2025.

Playing all of 2026 at age 19, Quintero does have some offensive qualities to work with. He has a line-drive approach to all fields and his exit velocity took a nice step forward last year. He doesn’t strike out much, but he needs to cut down on his chase to become a more complete hitter. That will determine his ultimate ceiling because his defensive work might be special enough to carry him to the big leagues.

Joswa Lugo was the big prize for the Angels when the 2024 international signing period opened, getting $2.3 million to sign. Almost at the other end of the spectrum was Quintero, a young Panamanian catcher who also signed at the start of the period in January of that year, but for just $25,000. His debut in the Dominican Summer League after signing was nondescript, but he took a nice step forward during his United States debut in the Arizona Complex League in 2025.

A compact backstop at 5-foot-9, Quintero’s work behind the plate is his calling card. He has the chance to be a plus defender in time, with excellent receiving and blocking skills. His arm is also plus, and he has already shown the ability to control the running game at the lower levels. 

How much his bat can catch up to his glove will determine Quintero’s ultimate role. The right-handed hitter can make hard contact with a line-drive approach to all fields. But he’s too aggressive at the plate and will need to make better swing decisions as he advances to give him the chance to be more than a defensive-minded backup.
