Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 50

Already 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds when he signed for $250,000 out of the Dominican Republic in January 2024, two weeks after turning 17, Gonzales has gotten more physically imposing since. The Red Sox named him their Latin program player of the year in 2024 after he tore up the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League in his pro debut, and he encored by winning the Carolina League batting title (.298) as the second-youngest qualifier (age 18) in the Single-A circuit.

Gonzales has some of the best bat-to-ball skills and perhaps the most raw power in the system, and the next step will be getting him to tap into the latter. His bat speed and considerable strength generate huge exit velocities, but he homered just four times in 2025 because he had the 11th-worst groundball rate (57 percent) in the Minors. If he can improve the path of his right-handed swing and curb his pull-happy tendencies, reducing his rolled-over grounders and driving the ball in the air more frequently, he could produce 30 or more homers per season.

More athletic and agile than most players his size, Gonzales can flash average speed once he gets going and steal an occasional base, though he may slow a bit as he continues to mature physically. He played most of his debut at first base but spent all of 2025 shuttling between all three outfield positions. While he was better than would be expected in center field, he fits better on a corner and still has the arm strength that produced mid-90s fastballs when he pitched as an amateur. One of Boston's most gifted position prospects also has outstanding makeup, yet he comes with a huge amount of variance -- a ceiling as an All-Star right fielder and a floor as a hit-over-power first baseman.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 70 | Field: 45 | Overall: 50

Gonzales already stood 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds when he signed out of the Dominican Republic for $250,000 in January 2024, and he has grown taller and stronger since. He broke into pro ball by winning the Red Sox's Latin program player of the year award by slashing .320/.391/.517 with 20 extra-base hits and eight steals in 47 games in Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He also led the DSL Red Sox Red to the league championship by batting .444 with nine RBIs in seven contests.

Gonzales already has plus raw power with more to come, and he should tap into it better as he learns to lift and drive pitches to his pull side. He generates huge exit velocities with his quick right-handed swing and prodigious strength, and his promise as an all-around hitter offers additional intrigue. He posted very good non-chase and contact rates in the DSL, walking nearly as much as he struck out while hammering balls to all fields.

Surprisingly athletic and agile for his size, Gonzales presently can flash average speed but figures to slow down some as he continues to get bigger. He surprisingly has spent most of 2025 in center field, though his range is stretched there. He might be able to get the job done on the corners, and at worst, should be an average defender at first base in the long run. He also drew interest from pro teams as a pitcher, running his fastball into the mid-90s as an amateur, and he still maintains plus-plus arm strength.
