With fewer options for Rookie or short-season ball available to teams, it’s become more common for young international signees to spend multiple seasons in the Dominican Summer League. The Reds did just that with their top three signings from the 2024 class: Adolfo Sanchez and Naibel Mariano, who both got seven-figure bonuses, and Morillo, who signed for $420,000. Morillo put up solid numbers both summers and is ready to come stateside.
Morillo is a switch-hitting catcher who will play all of his 2026 season in the United States at age 19. His bat is definitely ahead of his glove, with an advanced approach that led to more walks than strikeouts over two summers in the DSL and helped him hold his own against older competition in the Australian League this offseason. His swing works from both sides of the plate with more gap-to-gap thump right now, though there’s power for him to get to. He needs to tighten up his zone a little bit and his swing can get long, but there are building blocks for him to be an average hitter with average power.
While Morillo has more work to do behind the dish with maybe an average arm and more rudimentary receiving skills, the Reds love the intangibles and leadership qualities he possesses, including improving his English and showing up in Arizona early to get to work for the season ahead. There might come a time when they’ll want to move him from behind the plate so his bat can advance, but that decision isn’t coming any time soon.
