Joswa Lugo may have been the top target for the Angels at the start of the 2024 international signing period, getting $2.3 million. But they were also excited to add Alvarez’s tools to the system for their second-highest bonus. After giving the outfielder $685,000, they sent him to make his debut in the Dominican Summer League, where he showed off a solid feel for the game in many areas.

A right-handed hitter who has a projectable and athletic 6-foot-3 frame, Alvarez impressed right out of the gate with his ability to give consistently professional at-bats. He has a plan at the plate, will take walks, doesn’t chase a ton and generally makes good swing decisions. He has a short, compact swing with good bat speed, and there’s some confidence he’ll grow into more power as he physically matures. 

Alvarez is a plus runner who likes to use his speed on the bases -- he swiped 32 bags in the DSL -- and in the outfield, where he has the chance to play center for a long time. There’s a good amount of ceiling here, and he’ll see if he can take some steps toward it during his United States debut at age 18 this season.

The Angels’ big prize at the start of the 2024 international signing period was shortstop Joswa Lugo, who signed for $2.3 million. That didn’t keep them from going after talent, with Alvarez joining the organization for $685,000, the second-highest bonus the Angels doled out during the period. Like Lugo, he went to the Dominican Summer League and was making a strong first impression at the start of his pro debut.

A trim and athletic 6-foot-3 outfielder, Alvarez flashes all five tools. He’s impressed with a solid approach at the outset, giving consistently professional at-bats with a short, compact swing and excellent bat speed. He has gap power now, and there’s hope he’ll grow into more as he gains strength and fills out his frame.

An above-average runner now, Alvarez has shown off glimpses of plus defensive instincts in center field, and he does have the chance to stay there. Just 17 for all of his debut season, he could outgrow center, but would be an above-average defender in either corner spot.
