The Astros excel at turning inexpensive international pitchers into big league assets, and they may be at it again with Brito. Signed for $10,000 out of Venezuela in November 2023, he broke into pro ball by posting a 0.40 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He earned two promotions in the next two weeks and continued to thrive.
Brito's fastball has jumped about 5 mph since he turned pro, and he now operates in the mid-90s and reaches 99 mph with quality carry up in the zone. His low-80s slider has plenty of horizontal action and projects as a second plus pitch, and his feel for spin extends to an upper-70s curveball with depth. He also exhibits aptitude for throwing an upper-80s changeup with some tumble that could develop into an average offering.
Brito is athletic, repeats his simple delivery well and has had no trouble pounding the zone against lower-level hitters. The biggest question is his lack of physicality, as he's listed at 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds. Houston will give him every chance to develop as a starter and if durability becomes an issue, he has late-inning upside as a reliever.
