The Cardinals took a liking to the state of Tennessee, taking players from there with their first three Draft picks in 2025. In between fifth overall selection Liam Doyle and 72nd Tanner Franklin -- both University of Tennessee pitchers -- St. Louis went with the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year in Mitchell out of Houston High School in Germantown. Mitchell signed for above slot with a $2.25 million bonus instead of heading to Georgia Tech.
Some evaluators believe the left-handed-hitting Mitchell possesses one of the best pure hit tools among prep bats in the 2025 class. Starting with his hands held high, he coils like a spring to generate a quick stroke without much movement from his head. His strike-zone judgment was impressive as an amateur. There’s room to add strength in his 6-foot-2 frame too, and he could get to average pop by the time he reaches the Majors.
Mitchell will flash plus speed, but scouts questioned whether he could stick at shortstop long term with average range and arm strength. The Cardinals announced him as a center fielder on Draft Day and intend to cycle him between the grass and dirt beginning in the Florida State League, where he’ll play along fellow shortstop Yairo Padilla. Mitchell took well to a throwing program that could aid his chances at being valuable at either spot up the middle as St. Louis tries to find the right defensive home for his athleticism.

While Houston HS (Germantown, Tenn.) produced top-two-rounds pitchers in the 2002-03 Drafts in Matt Cain and Stu Pomeranz, the Mustangs never had a hitter in that same class until Mitchell. He had one of the more disciplined approaches in the 2025 prep crop and should be able to play up the middle at the next level. That was enough to land Gatorade's Tennessee high school Player of the Year in Cain/Pomeranz territory as he went to the Cardinals in the second round and signed away from his Georgia Tech commitment with an above-slot $2.25 million bonus.
Mitchell has a quick left-handed stroke, rarely chases pitches out of the strike zone and makes consistent contact. He has advanced feel for the barrel and a willingness to use the entire field. His hitting ability, bat speed and projectable strength should enable him to grow into average power once he's fully developed.
Though Mitchell is a good athlete with solid-to-plus speed, he had just average range and arm strength at shortstop, and the Cardinals announced him as a center fielder on Draft Day, though they’re willing to stay open to the idea of him staying on the dirt too. At least, he should stay somewhere up the middle, keeping his value relatively high.

Though Mitchell is a good athlete with solid-to-plus speed, he probably won't stay at shortstop. His arm and range are merely average, making him better suited for the right side of the infield. He doesn't have the smoothest hands, which could make center field a more viable option than second base.
