Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

All of the Giants' best prospects from their 2023 international class were bargains: Keyner Martinez ($10,000), Carlos Gutierrez ($32,500), Luis de la Torre ($10,000) and Diaz ($50,000). The Cuban-born Diaz made the jump to Single-A at age 18 in 2024 and returned there last season to help San Jose win the California League championship. He batted .269/.320/.405 and topped the circuit in hits (139) and doubles (32).

Diaz tries to do too much at the plate, chasing all types of pitches out of the zone and trying to yank them all to left field. The right-handed hitter somewhat makes up for those flaws with his ability to put the bat on the ball and generate high exit velocities when he makes contact, and he could develop 20-homer power if he tones down his approach. He crushes fastballs but flails against breaking balls, so he's going to have to make adjustments.

A solid runner, Diaz enhanced his value by improving his basestealing aptitude and proving he could play center field in 2025. Mostly a corner outfielder in the past, he has good instincts and can remain in center going forward. His strong arm helped him notch 25 assists in 212 outfield starts during his first three pro seasons.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The Cuban-born Diaz has exceeded expectations since signing for $50,000 in July 2023. He produced in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League in 2023 and the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League last year before making the jump to Single-A at age 18 in June. He slashed .279/.333/.434 with 21 extra-base hits in 55 games as one of the California League's youngest players.

An aggressive right-handed hitter, Diaz looks to pull pitches and chases too many outside the strike zone. He hits the ball hard when he makes contact and already shows solid raw power that could grow as he continues to fill out his 6-foot-2 frame. He raked against fastballs but scuffled against breaking balls in Single-A, and he'll need to make adjustments to survive against more advanced pitching.

Diaz has average speed and is a bit quicker once he gets going. He has a knack for chasing down balls in the outfield, providing solid range on the corners and warranting a look in center field. His strong arm adds to his right-field profile and he registered 11 assists in 40 starts there last year.
