Sundstrom’s pro trajectory has been defined by power, athleticism and a clear sense of his own game. After two seasons at Santa Rosa Junior College, he transferred to Santa Barbara, where he earned All-Big West First Team honors with a 1.071 OPS, 15 homers and 11 stolen bases. Drafted by Seattle in the 10th round of 2023, he quickly made an impact in his first full season of pro ball with High-A Everett, hitting 13 homers and stealing 26 bases, then capped the year with a stint in the Arizona Fall League. He wasn’t able to build on that success as he struggled with a move to Double-A in 2025.
Sundstrom brings a rare combination of strength and athleticism to Seattle's outfield pool. A right-handed hitter, he generates real loft and leverage, producing consistent power to all fields. His swing is somewhat stiff and grooved with a true power-over-hit profile. There always had been swing-and-miss in his game, and it spiked in Double-A last year with close to a 30 percent strikeout rate, and he didn’t offset it with as many walks as he had previously. He gets high marks for his ability to not let negative at-bats derail him too much, but he’ll have to find ways to make more contact and chase less, especially against breaking stuff.
Defensively, Sundstrom has the speed and instincts to play center field, though he projects more comfortably in a corner spot long term. His athleticism and versatility mean he could see action across all three outfield positions, maximizing his value while bringing right-handed power off the bench. While a move to Double-A presented challenges in a tough hitter’s park, scouts remain excited about his ability to impact games with a combination of power and speed.

After spending two seasons at Santa Rosa Junior College, Sundstrom took his tools to Santa Barbara and proceeded to earn All-Big West First Team honors with an OPS over 1.000, 15 homers and 11 steals. A 10th-round selection of the Mariners in the 2023 Draft, Sundstrom had a strong first season with High-A Everett with 13 homers and 26 steals before capping things off in the Arizona Fall League.
Sundstrom brings strength and physicality to a system that doesn’t have a lot of that. His power from the right side is real, with good leverage and the ability to hit the ball in the air. His swing is a little stiff and grooved, so while he has a decent approach and a willingness to draw walks, he’s likely always going to be a power-over-hit type of bat that could struggle with right-handed breaking stuff as he moves to the upper levels.
A solid runner, Sundstrom largely played center field for Santa Barbara and he could probably handle playing up the middle in a pinch. But he’s much better suited for an outfield corner, and it’s possible he could tap into his power enough to profile there regularly. It’s most likely that he mashes enough to reach the big leagues by playing all three outfield spots and providing right-handed pop off the bench.

Sundstrom started his college career at Santa Rosa Junior College. After hitting well in his second season there, he was able to transfer to UC Santa Barbara for his third year. He turned in an all-Big West First Team selection performance with an OPS over 1.000 that scouts noticed. The Mariners nabbed him in the tenth round of the 2023 Draft and turned in a very solid first full season with High-A Everett.
A big, physical and athletic outfielder, Sundstrom is a 6-foot-3 presence on the field. He’s a right-handed hitter with above-average raw power he’s still learning to tap into consistently. He does have feel to barrel up the ball and has shown he can lift the ball to his pull side, though there’s a question if he’ll hit enough as he advances to get to average in-game power. He’s an average runner who has shown he can steal a base, reaching double digits in home runs and steals in his first full season.
After playing center field almost exclusively at Santa Barbara, Sundstrom has seen time at all three outfield spots in the Mariners organization. He’s seen more time in the corners, where he has enough arm strength to profile, though he may not have the offensive chops to play there every day. The most likely outcome is for him to be a productive fourth or fifth outfielder.
