King was one of the best Division II players in the country in his two seasons at Wingate with a 47-game hitting streak in 2022-23 and a .411 average and 1.155 OPS in 50 games as a sophomore. That earned him looks in the Cape Cod League and with the U.S. collegiate national team, and after he continued to hit at both spots, he transferred to Wake Forest for his junior year. King didn’t skip a beat on a loaded Demon Deacons squad, slashing .308/.377/.577 with 16 homers in 60 games as a junior, and he became one of three Wake first-rounders when the Nationals took him 10th overall.
Standing at 6-foot, King has a compact right-handed swing that can spray the ball around the diamond. He added 20 pounds of muscle since first getting to college, and that helped him add bat speed, resulting in the high averages across all his stops. He chased too much, however, during his one season in the ACC, and he continued to expand the zone against sliders during a brief spin with Single-A Fredericksburg after the Draft. His flat bat path may also dull his in-game power unless he can adjust it and his overall approach – two goals as he enters his first full season.
A former high jumper in high school, King is an excellent runner and athlete, and he played all over for Wake, honing in primarily on third base and center field. The Nats, for their part, believe he can use his range and solid arm strength best at shortstop and intend to keep him there to begin his career. King has shown an ability to adjust to each coming test in recent years, and while he might still be raw for a power-conference prospect, he brings upside to the Washington system.

King starred for two seasons at NCAA Division II Wingate (N.C.), fashioning a 47-game hitting streak in 2022-23 and slashing .411/.457/.699 with 11 homers and 13 steals as a sophomore. He has proven himself with wood bats, winning MVP accolades in the Valley League in 2022 and distinguishing himself with the U.S. collegiate national team and in the Cape Cod League last summer. He started games at four positions this spring after transferring to Wake Forest and became one of three Demon Deacons to go in the first round when the Nationals selected him 10th overall. He signed for $5.15 million.
King excels at putting the ball in play with a compact right-handed stroke geared for hitting line drives to all fields. He needs to improve his plate discipline, however, because he swings and chases too much, making a lot of weak contact and cutting into his walk totals. While he has added 20 pounds since arriving in college and has impressive bat speed, his approach and flat stroke may not be conducive to more than 12-15 homers per year.
With well-above-average speed and solid arm strength, King is a versatile defender. He opened this season as a center fielder before settling in at third base, also seeing action at shortstop and second base. He'd have the most pro value at shortstop, though he's merely average there and would need to polish up his actions and throwing accuracy. He's solid at the other spots and may fit best in the outfield because his hands are just OK. The Nationals indicated after the Draft they intend to play him at short, hoping he can lock into the position with more consistent playing time there.
