The son of former big league catcher Darron Cox, Jonah has posted huge numbers at three different schools in his college career. He spent his first two seasons at junior colleges, batting .397/.472/.683 with 49 steals (second in the NJCAA) at Butler (Kan.) in 2021 and .431/.502/.631 with 43 swipes (sixth in the NJCAA) at Eastern Oklahoma State last year. He earned Summit League Player of the Year accolades and helped Oral Roberts reach the College World Series this spring by batting .412/.470/.646 with 28 steals. He topped NCAA Division I with 114 hits and fashioned a 47-game hitting streak, tied for the third-longest in D-I history.

Cox has well-above-average speed and an offensive approach that focuses on getting on base to take advantage of his quickness. A right-handed hitter, he makes consistent contact to all fields, is adept at bunting and can turn infield grounders into singles. While he doesn't look to launch balls, he has good bat speed and enough strength to produce 12-15 homers annually.  

Cox's speed translates better on the bases than it does on defense at this point. A shortstop in junior college, he's still learning the nuances of center field after shifting there with the Golden Eagles. He's quick enough to become an asset in center, albeit with a below-average arm.

After tearing up junior college pitching for two years at Butler (Kan.) CC and Eastern Oklahoma State JC, Cox led Oral Roberts to the Men's College World Series in 2023, topping NCAA Division I with 114 hits and fashioning a 47-game hitting streak (the third-longest in D-I history). The Athletics drafted him in the sixth round that July and dealt him to the Giants for Ross Stripling seven months later. He stole 58 bases in each of his first two seasons in San Francisco's system before suddenly becoming one of the hottest hitters in the Minors in the first two months of 2026, earning a promotion from Double-A to the big leagues.

He's chasing fewer pitches and hitting the ball harder than ever, and has looked much more dynamic at the plate. He's doing a better job of getting on base, and while he won't be a slugger, he now appears more likely to translate his bat speed and strength into 15-homer power.

Cox's best tool is his plus-plus speed and he uses it to wreak havoc on the bases. A shortstop in junior college, he began playing center field at Oral Roberts and has developed into a solid defender there as he has gained more experience. He has fringy arm strength but gets to balls quickly and recorded 10 assists in each of the last two seasons.

The Athletics drafted him in the sixth round last July and traded him to the Giants for Ross Stripling seven months later.

With his well-above-average speed, Cox should focus on getting on base so he can make the most of it. He tried to do too much in his pro debut, losing control of the strike zone and his timing at the plate as he tried to create more loft with his right-handed stroke. He has enough bat speed and strength to provide 10-15 homers on an annual basis, but he needs to concentrate on making more consistent contact.

A shortstop in junior college, he shifted to center field after joining Oral Roberts and still is learning the nuances of the position. He has the speed to become at least a solid defender in center, though his arm strength is below average.
