The third reliever selected in the 2023 Draft, Hales went in the fourth round out of Santa Clara. He has moved quickly in the Minors, finishing his debut summer in the High-A South Atlantic League playoffs and reaching Double-A midway through his first full season. He's armed with one of the most unhittable fastballs in the Minors.
Hales usually works at 94-97 mph and peaks at 100, but velocity is just part of the reason why opponents repeatedly swing through his heater. He delivers his fastball from a low slot with a short arm action in back, producing terrific carry and deception. It also features some armside run and he relies on it about three-quarters of the time.
Hales' other option is a mid-80s slider with some sharp horizontal action at its best, but it doesn't induce many chases or miss many bats. If he can refine his slide piece, he's a potential closer because he throws enough strikes and thrives on competition. He's on course to arrive in Texas less than two years after he turned pro.
