Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Indiana hasn't had a high school pitcher taken in the top five rounds since Athletics fourth-rounder Skylar Szynski in 2016, but Letson could break through this year. He has passed Cameron Tilly (Castle HS, Newburgh) as the state's top prep arm because he has performed better this spring and has more projectability. A blister resulted in a bad outing in front of several scouts in early May, though Letson rebounded to finish strong.

Letson's fastball has ranged from 88-94 mph in 2023, and he should find more consistent velocity as he adds strength to his wiry frame. His heater plays up with high spin rates and riding action. He also has good feel for his pair of secondary pitches in the low 80s, showing the ability to land his tight slider and sinking changeup in the zone.

Letson has a quick, whippy arm and an athletic delivery that he repeats well. There's a significant gap between his present stuff and his ceiling, but he could have three solid or better offerings once he matures physically. He has committed to Purdue but is considered relatively signable.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

Letson trended upward throughout his senior spring at Floyd Central (Ind.) HS and placed 179th on MLB Pipeline’s 2023 Draft rankings heading into the summer. A blister resulted in a bad outing in front of several scouts in May, and that performance may have scared some teams off as he continued to fall the first two days of the Draft. The Brewers moved to take the Purdue commit in the 11th round (the first without slot bonuses attached) and signed him for $482,600, close to fourth- or fifth-round money.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander was up to 88-94 mph with his fastball in 2023, an upward trend that helped place him in Milwaukee’s Draft discussions. There’s an expectation that even more velocity could be coming as he fills out his lanky frame, and the pitch already plays well because of its solid ride. His low-80s tight slider could give him another above-average pitch with further development, while his sinking changeup in the same velo range has the workings of a decent third pitch.

Adding to the optimism that the Crew picked up a Day 3 starter is that Letson has a repeatable and athletic delivery that could help him throw strikes in pro ball. The 2023 uptick certainly helped Letson’s trajectory, but it’s still mostly about projection with the young arm. Milwaukee believes proper professional pitching instruction could help Letson get to a future Major League rotation even if it takes a long road as is typical for cold-weather arms.

2023

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Letson passed Cameron Tilly (Castle HS, Newburgh) as the top prep arm in Indiana this spring because he performed better this spring and has more projectability. A blister resulted in a bad outing in front of several scouts in early May, though Letson rebounded to finish strong. Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 179 prospect entering the Draft, the right-hander went in the 11th round to the Brewers and signed for $482,600 -- on par with a recommended slot bonus in the late fourth round.

The Brewers believe there’s plenty of room to grow, too, considering he didn’t have a pitching coach growing up to guide his development.
