Ever since Gil signed with the Braves in January 2023 out of the Dominican Republic for $110,000, he’s proven to be the best prospect from the class in the Braves' system. He hit well in his debut in the Dominican Summer League and has continued to hold his own in the United States, reaching full-season ball at age 18 in 2024, then turning in a solid overall season back with Single-A Augusta in '25.
A 6-foot-1 right-handed hitter, Gil has some attributes -- from his speed to his defensive acumen -- that give him an intriguing combination of high floor and exciting tools. His nearly top-of-the-scale speed has allowed him to steal 94 bases over the past two seasons in the United States. At the plate, he already seems to understand that his job is to get on base, drawing walks at a good clip and limiting his strikeouts. That’s a good foundation to be a solid hitter with routinely competitive at-bats, even if he hasn’t shown much impact yet.
Added strength should help him on both sides of the ball. He has a good chance to stick at shortstop, with that 70-grade speed helping with his range, and enough arm to play the left side of the infield. He’s played some third as well and could no-doubt handle second should that be needed.

Gil was one of eight players the Braves handed out bonuses of six figures or more to at the start of the 2023 international signing period, starting with the $2.5 million Luis Guanipa received. Gil was at the bottom end of that group, getting $110,000 to join the organization, but his tools have stood out as much as anyone from the Braves class as he’s played his way from the Dominican Summer League in 2023 to the Florida Complex League and up to full-season Augusta during his United States debut in 2024 at the age of 18.
In his brief time as a pro, Gil has already stood out for some loud tools, led by his close to top-of-the-scale speed. He’s at least a 70 runner, one who stole 40 bases in 48 attempts over 90 combined games in 2024. He’s shown a knack for contact and can really punish fastballs and he’s impressed with his overall approach, not chasing, drawing walks and getting on base (.376 on base percentage heading into 2025). He hasn’t shown much impact offensively yet, but there’s optimism that there is some juice to come in his right-handed swing as he gains strength.
While Gil has seen time at both shortstop and third thus far, he has a real chance to stick at short long-term and the plan is to largely keep running him out primarily at the premium position, with a lot of range and enough arm to handle it.
