Sebastian Walcott's $3.2 million bonus absorbed most of Texas' 2023 international bonus pool, but they also may have found a bargain in Morel, who signed for $97,500 and was discovered while the Rangers were scouting other players in the Dominican Republic. He batted .344/.417/.644 in his pro debut, topping the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League with 17 doubles, eight triples, 32 extra-base hits and 116 total bases. He puts on one of the best batting-practice shows in the system and draws some comparisons to two-time All-Star Marcell Ozuna.
Morel has a quick right-handed swing, more strength than most teenagers and room on his 6-foot-2 frame to add more muscle. He has plus raw power and gets to most of it, already showing the aptitude to drive balls in the air to his pull side. He'll need to tighten up his plate discipline as he faces more advanced pitching, but he doesn't strike out excessively.
Morel is fairly athletic but could slow down a bit as he matures physically. He's presently a solid runner but hasn't shown much feel for stealing bases. He has arm strength to match, adding to his right-field profile, though his defensive instincts need some work.
