Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

Flores drew attention from scouts in Venezuela because of his advanced skills behind the plate. That’s a big reason why the Angels gave him $280,000 to sign at the start of the 2023 international signing period. He made his debut in the Dominican Summer League and showed that word of his defensive acumen was not greatly exaggerated, while he also shook off a slow offensive start to provide a little more with the bat than anticipated.

Flores’ calling card will always be his glove work. The skills are there for him to perhaps be a plus receiver in the future and he already has a plus arm, one that threw out 53.1 percent of potential basestealers in the DSL during his debut. The Angels thought so highly of his work behind the dish they thought he’d be able to handle higher-level arms and invited him to big league camp this spring.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The Angels handed out 10 six-figure bonuses at the start of the 2023 international signing period in January. Right in the middle of that pack, bonus-wise, was Flores, a catcher from Venezuela who received $280,000 to join the organization. Signed for his potential behind the dish, the teenager has lived up to advanced billing on that side of the ball, while having a little more impact with the bat than anticipated during his debut this summer in the Dominican Summer League.

Flores is a glove-first backstop with a chance to be an outstanding defensive catcher at the big league level. He has the chance to develop into a plus receiver when all is said and done to go along with a plus arm that was already controlling the running game in the DSL.

What kind of role Flores has eventually might depend on how he develops as a hitter. He’s stocky but strong, and the right-handed hitter has shown some ability to impact the ball already. He has a power-over-hit profile, but the Angels are pleased with the strides he’s already taken at the plate. His defense alone could help him carve out a future as a backup, but if the bat keeps progressing, he could eventually be more than that.
