One of the better defenders behind the dish in the 2023 international signing class, Flores received a $280,000 bonus to sign when the period opened that January. So far, he’s moved more rapidly up the ladder than shortstop Felix Morrobel, the top of the Angels’ crop that winter. Flores' ability behind the plate will enable him to keep advancing and he’s shown a little more acumen that could make him an even better prospect than expected.
Compact and strong, Flores has shown some ability to drive the ball from the right side. He bested expectations with the bat in full-season ball to start off the 2024 season after skipping over the Arizona Complex League. He’s too aggressive at the plate and can chase too much, especially softer stuff, though he can punish a fastball. What pop he has shown has been to his pull side, and with too high of a ground-ball rate, he could stand to find ways to leverage the ball more in the air.
The Angels have felt comfortable moving Flores aggressively and inviting him to big league camp in Spring Training two years in a row -- even though he just turned 19 in February -- because of his defense. His strong arm has thrown out 40 percent of potential basestealers in his pro career to date. He’s turning into an excellent receiver who blocks and calls the game well, looking like he’s going to be a plus overall defender with that plus arm and plus instincts. If he can get his bat close to average, he has the chance to be a standout regular in the big leagues.

Flores drew attention from scouts in Venezuela because of his advanced skills behind the plate. That’s a big reason why the Angels gave him $280,000 to sign at the start of the 2023 international signing period. He made his debut in the Dominican Summer League and showed that word of his defensive acumen was not greatly exaggerated, while he also shook off a slow offensive start to provide a little more with the bat than anticipated.
Flores’ calling card will always be his glove work. The skills are there for him to perhaps be a plus receiver in the future and he already has a plus arm, one that threw out 53.1 percent of potential basestealers in the DSL during his debut. The Angels thought so highly of his work behind the dish they thought he’d be able to handle higher-level arms and invited him to big league camp this spring.

The Angels handed out 10 six-figure bonuses at the start of the 2023 international signing period in January. Right in the middle of that pack, bonus-wise, was Flores, a catcher from Venezuela who received $280,000 to join the organization. Signed for his potential behind the dish, the teenager has lived up to advanced billing on that side of the ball, while having a little more impact with the bat than anticipated during his debut this summer in the Dominican Summer League.
Flores is a glove-first backstop with a chance to be an outstanding defensive catcher at the big league level. He has the chance to develop into a plus receiver when all is said and done to go along with a plus arm that was already controlling the running game in the DSL.
What kind of role Flores has eventually might depend on how he develops as a hitter. He’s stocky but strong, and the right-handed hitter has shown some ability to impact the ball already. He has a power-over-hit profile, but the Angels are pleased with the strides he’s already taken at the plate. His defense alone could help him carve out a future as a backup, but if the bat keeps progressing, he could eventually be more than that.
