Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

A $200,000 signing out of Venezuela in 2023, Virahonda played in the Dominican Summer League in both '23 and '24, and with a .510 OPS in the latter campaign, he didn’t look like a player primed for a breakout with a move stateside. Fortunately, that’s exactly what happened after making adjustments heading into his age-19 season. He pushed past the Arizona Complex League in 2025 with a .347/.464/.455 line in 37 games and then held his own with a .256/.362/.357 performance and 108 wRC+ in 33 games at Single-A Visalia.

Batting from the right side, Virahonda stays short to the ball with a simple operation and minimal load. He got a bit swing-happy against offspeed pitches in the California League, but nothing overly worrisome for a player making the large jump from the complex to full-season ball. It’s just average raw power right now, but Virahonda did a nice job of upping his line-drive rate with his move to the U.S., and he keeps the ball off the ground, good news for someone with below-average speed.

His overall profile earns a boost for the fact that he looks like an above-average, potentially even plus defender behind the plate. Standing at 5-foot-11, he moves well back there to earn good reviews for his receiving and blocking, and he’s quick with his throws, getting the ball out efficiently to limit the opposing running game. Virahonda has blossomed into the best catching prospect in the Arizona system, but now it’s on him to hold onto that status.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

With Adrian Del Castillo graduating from prospect status this summer, the title of best catching prospect in the D-backs’ system is very much up for grabs. Playing in his first stateside season at age 19, Virahonda has seized it. A $200,000 signee out of Venezuela in 2023, the backstop repeated the Dominican Summer League last year with down results, but Arizona officials believe that taste of failure fueled him to make the proper adjustments for 2025. Virahonda broke past the Arizona Complex League after hitting .347/.464/.455 with just an 11.8 percent strikeout rate over 37 games and has carried that success to Single-A Visalia following a July promotion.

Virahonda is a stout 5-foot-11 and runs a simple operation from the right side of the box, using a minimal load that helps stay short to the ball. He was much more pull-heavy during his DSL struggles in 2024 but has gotten back to spraying the ball to all fields this summer. It’s a good line-drive approach too, though he lacks the pop to muscle the ball out of the yard consistently. Arizona officials believe he could get to a little more power as he faces better control from opposing pitchers away from the complex.

The main driver of Virahonda’s profile right now is on the defensive side. He has exceptional arm strength and combines that with enough athleticism for quick and clean transfers from behind the plate. Though he is a tad undersized for the position, he moves well enough back there to be a sound receiver and blocker. That, combined with his bat-to-ball ability, gives him a solid shot as a future Major League backup backstop, if not more.
