Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Splitter: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

In 2024, the Mariners signed Chia-Shi Shen out of Chinese Taipei. They hit that pitching market again in 2025, signing Lin for $460,000 when the signing period opened in January. A former two-way player who pitched well in international competition, Lin looked really good in Spring Training after signing, but then wasn’t able to make his pro debut because of a lat strain, though he did get some innings in the bridge league at the end of the year, once again raising expectations.

Lin had played both the infield and outfield previously, and he brings that athleticism to the mound. The 5-foot-11 right-hander has the chance to have a full starter’s repertoire, with his splitter the standout pitch. It flashes plus and can fall off the table with excellent depth while also throwing a distinct changeup. His fastball sits around 92-93 mph, but he’s shown the ability to reach back for more, and there could be more velocity in the future. He has some feel to spin with a more traditional slider, though it’s behind the other offerings, and there’s been some talk of adding a sweeper to his mix.

Lin’s athleticism helps him repeat his delivery and find the strike zone consistently. His stuff may never wow anyone, but his feel for pitching and full array of offerings gives him the chance to start, with the Mariners getting to see what he’s like in competition this season.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Splitter: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

The Mariners were very aggressive on the international market when the 2025 signing period opened, handing out bonuses of $2+ million to a pair of bats in Kendry Martinez and Yorger Bautista. But they were far from done, handing out five more six-figure bonuses, and they didn't limit themselves to Latin America. They also added Lin, a Taiwanese right-hander, to the mix for $460,000. Lin was a former two-way player who stood out on the mound for his national team in the WSBC U-18 World Cup in the past and excited the Mariners with his early mound work in Spring Training, but a lat strain kept him from making his pro debut in 2025.

Now healthy, Lin should start providing a return on that investment in 2026. With experience as both an infielder and outfielder, he carries that athleticism to the mound consistently, helping offset his 5-foot-11 stature. He also has the makings of at least a four-pitch mix, starting with a fastball that sits in the low 90s, but flashes plus velocities at times with carry up in the zone, with more expected as the 19-year old matures. His best pitch is his splitter, which can be plus and fall off the table, though he also has a separate changeup. His breaking ball is behind the other offspeed offerings, but he shows some feel for spin and shape of a slider approaching average.

Using a simple and repeatable delivery, Lin has shown a propensity for filling up the strike zone with all of his offerings. Before he got hurt, there were some in the Mariners organization who thought Lin had more potential than fellow Mariners Taiwanese right-hander Chia-Shi Shen.
