Nehomar Ochoa Sr. pitched three seasons in the Expos system before falling off a horse and injuring his shoulder. His son was born in Venezuela shortly before his career ended and came to the United States at age 10, blossoming into a physical and toolsy outfielder. The Astros signed him for $300,000 (double slot value) as an 11th-rounder from a Houston high school in 2023.
Already 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds when he turned pro shortly before his 18th birthday, Ochoa's strength and bat speed generate at least plus raw power from the right side of the plate. He focuses on trying to launch balls to his pull side rather than letting his pop come naturally, and that aggressiveness results in swing-and-miss issues. His bat comes with considerable risk but he could offer 25-30 homers per season if he figures things out.
Ochoa moves very well for his size and possesses average speed. He lacks polish as a corner outfielder and needs to refine his reads, routes and consistency. Clocked up to 95 mph as a high school pitcher, he definitely has the arm strength for right field and is challenging for the Single-A Carolina League lead in outfield assists.
