Scouting Report

Draft

Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

There has never been a high school left-hander from Massachusetts taken in the first round of the Draft and the last time a prep pitcher of any kind from the Bay State went in the opening round was back in 2011, when the Blue Jays took Tyler Beede, who instead headed to Vanderbilt. White has at times been tough to scout as he’s been picky about which events to attend, but he did show what the fuss has been about both in PDP League and East Coast Pro Showcase action this past summer before taking a nice step forward this spring.

White checks off a lot of boxes in terms of his size, he’s 6-foot-5, his pure stuff and his left-handedness. He was up to 96-97 mph with his fastball over the summer, missing bats with it up in the zone. He couples it with what could be a plus curveball, thrown with high spin rates in the upper-70s. He doesn’t throw it as much yet, but he showed off enough low-80s changeups to give a sense that he’s going to have a very good three-pitch mix in the future.

Everything works well in terms of White’s delivery, and though he did struggle with his command at times over the summer because all of his moving parts can get out of sync, he was repeating well this spring and improved strike-throwing has led to some helium. There’s little question he’s the best prep lefty in the country, one who’ll likely have to go early to not follow in Beede’s footsteps and fulfill his commitment to Vanderbilt.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 45 | Overall: 55

The Marlins selected Noble Meyer 10th overall last July, grabbing the best prep pitcher in the 2023 class and also saving enough money to be able to afford the Draft's best left-hander -- high school or college -- in the supplemental first round. They took White 35th overall and signed him for $4.1 million, the equivalent of a mid-first-round bonus and a record for a New England draftee. Gatorade's Massachusetts high school player of the year as both a junior and senior, he worked 4 1/3 innings in a brief pro debut.

White could have three plus pitches once he's fully developed, starting with a fastball that operates at 92-95 and climbs to 97 mph with arm-side run and carry that keep it off barrels. He has a high-spin curveball that sits around 80 mph and has shown the ability to land it for strikes despite its significant break. He also has precocious feel for a low-80s changeup with fade even though he didn't need it much against amateur hitters.

Some evaluators believe White has a higher ceiling than Meyer, and he has proven just as polished in their first full pro seasons. He's 6-foot-5 and still learning how to keep his long limbs in sync, which leads to control issues at times. If he can develop reliable fastball command, he should become a frontline starter.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Not only did the Marlins snare the 2023 Draft's best high school pitcher with Noble Meyer in the first round, but they saved enough money with Meyer to grab the Draft's top southpaw -- high school or college -- in the supplemental first round. They drafted White 35th overall and signed him for $4.1 million, the equivalent of mid-first-round money and a record for a New England draftee. He won Gatorade's Massachusetts high school player of the year award as both a junior and senior.

White has the potential for three plus pitches, beginning with a fastball that sits at 92-95 mph and reaches 97 with impressive arm-side run and carry. His high-spin curveball parks around 80 mph, and he shows the ability to land it for strikes. He also has advanced feel for a fading low-80s changeup despite not needing it much against high school hitters.

His arm works well, and he throws without effort, though the 6-foot-5 White still is learning to keep his long limbs in sync on a consistent basis. He battles his command at times and melted down in the final start of his prep career in front of a large crowd of scouts. If he can locate his fastball where he wants, he should become a frontline starter.
