A Puerto Rico high school product, Melendez turned down a scholarship from Rice to sign with the Cubs for $400,000 as a seventh-rounder in 2023. While he spent his first two years in Rookie ball, he's one of the more interesting young hitters in the system.
Though he's a gangly 6-foot-3, Melendez has a relatively compact left-handed swing for his size and hit the ball harder than most 18-year-olds last season. He shows the aptitude for launching balls in the air to his pull side and could produce 25 or more homers annually once he adds some much-needed strength. He'll have to make adjustments to provide consistent contact against advanced pitching because he swings through pitches in the strike zone and chases others off the plate.
Melendez presently has average speed but will lose a step as he matures physically. A shortstop with decent range and solid arm strength, he'll likely change positions once his quickness diminishes. He might be able to stay in the middle infield at second base and definitely should be able to handle third base.
