McCullough starred at NCAA Division II Wingate (N.C.), helping the Bulldogs win the 2021 national championship and earning All-America accolades in each of his final two seasons. He proved himself further with five strong starts in the Cape Cod League before the 2022 Draft in which the Cubs selected him in the 10th round. He breezed through Single-A in his first full pro season, got knocked around in his initial two High-A outings, then logged a 2.57 ERA in his last seven starts.
McCullough attacks hitters with his fastball, which ranges from 91-95 mph and plays better than its velocity with its flat approach angle. His low-80s slider should give him a second solid offering once it becomes more consistent. His upper-70s curveball and low-80s changeup with some fade are both fringy and he doesn't have much faith in either.
Though he doesn't have the smoothest delivery, McCullough creates good extension and deception without compromising his control. He doesn't stand out with his ceiling but he has a high floor as one of the better bets in the system to remain a long-term starter. Other teams bring his name up repeatedly in trade talks and he should become at least a multi-inning reliever.

McCullough starred in four years at Wingate (N.C)., helping the Bulldogs win the NCAA Division II championship in 2021 and earning All-America honors in his final two seasons. He continued to impress in the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2022 before the Cubs made him a 10th-round pick. He carved up Single-A hitters in his first full pro season before initially struggling in High-A.
McCullough works aggressively with his fastball, which sits in the low 90s and tops out at 95 mph but stands out more with a flat approach angle and its carry and late action up in the strike zone. His best secondary pitch is a low-80s slider that should become a solid offering with more consistency. He doesn't have a lot of trust in his low-80s changeup with some fade or his upper-70s curveball, both of which are fringy.
While McCullough doesn't have the cleanest delivery, it creates some deception and he provides enough strikes. He eventually could fit in the back of a big league rotation, though he'll need to improve his changeup to make that happen. He also could have a future as a multi-inning reliever.
