The Rangers appreciated Lopez's defensive ability as a catcher and signed him for $347,500 out of Venezuela in 2022. He made his U.S. debut last summer and homered three times in four games at the end of June but played just once more before getting shut down with a sore arm. He slashed .289/.396/.644 in 13 games in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
A no-doubt catcher, Lopez looks natural and more advanced than most teenagers behind the plate. He moves well, receives and blocks well and threw out 39 percent of basestealers in his first two seasons thanks to plus arm strength and impressive accuracy. He's intelligent, already exhibits good feel for calling pitches and can communicate with hurlers in either English or Spanish.
There's nothing subtle about Lopez's left-handed stroke and approach, which are geared to launch balls to his pull side. His strength and exit velocities portend 15-20 homer power, with strikeouts a product of his swinging for the fences. He does exhibit some patience at the plate and could provide enough offense to go with his quality defense and become a starting catcher.

He's an agile defender and shuts down the running game with plus arm strength and impressive throwing accuracy. He's an intelligent catcher with an aptitude for calling pitches and the ability to communicate with pitchers in both English and Spanish.
Lopez's left-handed swing is geared to drive balls in the air to his pull side, though his pop does play to all fields. His power-over-hit approach will lead to strikeouts but also could produce 15-20 homers per season. His combination of defensive prowess and power potential gives him the upside of a starting catcher.
