Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

The Tigers have looked toward projectable, athletic, middle-of-the-field players since their first Draft under Scott Harris, Rob Metzler and Mark Conner in 2023. The strategy has helped remake the top of their prospect rankings. Given that recent history, a prep shortstop fit their profile for the 24th overall pick in 2025. Even so, Yost was a bit of a surprise, a late bloomer at Tampa’s Sickles High School who rode an outstanding senior season into the first round and a $3.25 million signing bonus.

Yost’s strength is an elite ability to make contact and a strong discipline to stay within the strike zone, both of which fit the Tigers’ organizational profile. His simple swing doesn’t produce much power, but there’s projection for that to follow as his body fills out. He has good speed and instincts on the basepaths and a reliable glove with good range in the field, raising belief he should be able to stick at shortstop even as his body fills out. Eventually, however, he might have to decide whether to sacrifice some contact and discipline for more thump.

The Tigers have built a deep pecking order of shortstop prospects over the past few years, from Kevin McGonigle to Bryce Rainer to John Peck to Franyerber Montilla. It’s possible most or all of them will get chances to show whether they can stick at the position defensively long term. Yost might have as good of a tool set as any of them to hold down the position, but his chances of hitting well enough to become a regular player depends more on projection than tangible results at this point. He’ll begin his career this summer, and even if his body fills out quickly, he’s arguably more of a longer-term project than a fast-track prospect.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Every Draft class has its share of high school pop-up prospects, and Yost was one of the most interesting ones in 2025. The Florida prepster was a late bloomer who didn’t do much on the summer showcase circuit and wasn’t considered much of a prospect at all until later in the process. Added physicality in the fall led to better results in his senior year at Sickles High School in Tampa, leading to teams showing a lot more interest in the early rounds. The Tigers ended up taking him 24th overall and signed him for $3.25 million.

A left-handed hitter, Yost has always had a very good feel to hit, with elite contact skills. He has a simple swing and knows the strike zone really well, giving confidence he’ll continue to make sound swing decisions and put the ball in play. What is more in question is his impact. He has gotten stronger, but any thoughts about future pop at the plate is a much deeper projection.

Yost has plus speed and uses his excellent baseball IQ to maximize it on the basepaths and defensively. He plays shortstop without flash but gets good reads. His hands work well, and he has enough arm to stick there. The Tigers have a loaded shortstop pipeline, headlined by Kevin McGonigle and Bryce Rainer, but Yost should get plenty of time to show he belongs next to those elite names as he works to keep adding strength.

His commitment to Florida, where he’d get to play with his older brother Hayden, might be a tough obstacle, but Yost wasn’t really thought to be the kind of guy who could go in the top two rounds until this spring.
