Scouting Report

Draft

Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

The Boston College baseball program has produced a good amount of Draft talent, especially in recent years, with four Eagles having been taken in the top five rounds over the last two Drafts combined. The highest selection of that group was outfielder Sal Frelick, who was the No. 15 pick in 2021. Honeyman, who hit well starting for the first time as a sophomore in 2022 and in the Cape Cod League, has the chance to join Frelick as another Boston College first-rounder, though a more inconsistent performance this spring hurt his stock a bit.

A right-handed hitter, Honeyman can show off outstanding athleticism, with quick-twitch actions and wiry strength in a Hunter Pence kind of way. He has outstanding bat-to-ball skills and rarely strikes out. There’s some raw power he’s learning to tap into, especially to his pull side, and he hit four homers in 100 plate appearances with a wood bat on the Cape. Scouts feel he could have average in-game power when all is said and done.

Honeyman is a tick above average as a runner, though it’s not likely to be a big part of his game. He is starting to show he has the chance to play center field after playing there over the summer, though he got most of his reps this spring in right. A team looking for a college performer who believes in the bat and can play up the middle could still consider his tools in the top two rounds.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Honeyman broke out as a Boston College sophomore in 2022, hitting .329/.402/.506 with only 16 strikeouts in 41 games, and carried that performance forward with a standout turn in the Cape Cod League that summer. He got off to another quick start as a junior, slashing .304/.383/.534 through 39 games, but went down with a shoulder injury in early May. Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 61 Draft prospect in 2023, Honeyman went to the Cardinals in the third round (90th overall) and signed for around slot at $700,000. He did not play for a St. Louis affiliate last year.

The right-handed hitter has a kinetic appearance in the box, starting with an open stance and then beginning his momentum forward with a leg kick. All that movement helps him especially protect the outside of the plate, and while he did chase breaking balls at an elevated rate as a junior Eagle, his outstanding bat-to-ball skills kept his strikeouts in check. He was learning to tap into pullside power in school, and his wiry strength could get him to average in-game power in the pros.

Honeyman is a little bit better than an average runner but wasn’t seen as a big threat to steal bases in college, though he did go 10-for-11 in attempts in 2023. He has some experience in center field but played mostly in right last spring. With Chase Davis a more prominent member of his Draft class and Victor Scott II ahead of him on the CF depth chart, Honeyman is likely headed for the corners long term.

Honeyman signed for around slot value at $700,000.
