Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50

Harrington went from walk-on to Big South Conference freshman of the year at Campbell in 2021, capping his season with five one-hit innings against eventual champion Mississippi State in the NCAA Regionals. He encored this spring by winning Big South pitcher of the year honors, topping NCAA Division I in victories (a school-record 12) and setting another Fighting Camels mark with 111 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings. He has a chance to pass Seth Johnson (40th overall, 2019) as the highest-drafted pitcher in the program's history.

Harrington's heater will range from 90-93 mph on some days and 93-96 on others, but it regularly misses bats with its run and carry. His best offering is a mid-80s changeup with tumble that elicits swings-and-misses in and out of the strike zone. He'll flash a plus mid-80s slider with depth, though it comes and goes, and he also has a show-me curveball in the upper 70s.

A quality athlete who also played quarterback in high school, Harrington repeats his low three-quarters delivery well and pounds the strike zone. He has a projectable 6-foot-2 frame and continues to get better, showing good feel for sequencing his pitches to keep hitters off balance. A Draft-eligible sophomore, he offers one of the higher floors in the 2022 college pitching crop, as well as the ceiling of a No. 3 starter.

A two-sport standout in high school who was also a quarterback, Harrington was a walk-on at Campbell but quickly landed in the Fighting Camels rotation. He was the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year and then won the conference’s Pitcher of the Year award in 2022 as a Draft-eligible sophomore. He became the school’s highest-drafted pitcher ever when he went No. 36 overall to the Pirates in that summer’s Draft. He showed his stuff would play at the next level by leading the organization in several pitching categories including K percentage and K/BB ratio.

Of all the highly-rated pitching prospects in the system, Harrington has the most advanced pitchability of the group. He can throw as many as five distinct pitches for strikes, though he uses his slower curve only sparingly. His fastball tops out at 95 mph, sitting 93-94 mph, but it’s run and carry allows it to play up. He mixes in a big mid-80s sweeping slider with big spin rates that flashes plus and his mid-80s changeup features tumble and can also miss bats. He added a cutter last year and it might eventually be another above-average offering as a shorter slider-ish pitch that plays well off of his sweeper.

Harrington uses his athleticism on the mound to repeat his low three-quarters delivery well, and he commands and mixes all of his pitches well. That gives him a high floor as a big league starter, with the potential for a little more velocity to allow him to take another big step forward.

In the span of two years, Harrington went from unknown walk-on to one of the best pitchers in Campbell history, earning Big South Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2021. He was then named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year in 2022, when he set school records in wins (12) and strikeouts (111). He surpassed Seth Johnson, who went No. 40 overall in 2019, as the highest-drafted pitcher in Fighting Camels history when he went No. 36 to the Pirates and signed for just over $2 million.

Harrington has a four-pitch mix that points to a future in a big league rotation. His fastball averaged around 92 mph at Campbell last year, touching 96, and it plays up because of its excellent run and carry. He has a plus mid-80s changeup with tumble that gets a lot of swings and misses and chases. His mid-80s slider has depth and flashes plus, though it’s not as consistent as the changeup, and he will fold in a slower, get-me-over curve as well.

A former high school quarterback, Harrington’s athleticism is a big plus on the mound, helping him repeat his low three-quarters delivery, leading to excellent command. There’s some projection to go along with his feel for pitching, giving him a high floor and the ceiling of a mid-rotation starter.

He encored this spring by winning Big South pitcher of the year honors, topping NCAA Division I in victories (a school-record 12) and setting another Fighting Camels mark with 111 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings. That allowed him to pass Seth Johnson (40th overall, 2019) as the highest-drafted pitcher in the program's history when the Pirates took him with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2022 Draft, signing him for a just under-slot bonus of around $2.05 million.

Harrington's heater will range from 90-93 mph on some days and 93-96 on others, but it regularly misses bats with its run and carry. His best offering is a mid-80s changeup with tumble that elicits swings-and-misses in and out of the strike zone. He has a projectable 6-foot-2 frame and continues to get better, showing good feel for sequencing his pitches to keep hitters off balance. That feel for pitching gives him a very high floor, with the pure stuff to give him the ceiling of a No. 3 starter.
