Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

Though potential first-round pick Noah Schultz was sidelined indefinitely by mononucleosis after his initial two-inning outing, scouts still had reason to flock to Oswego (Ill.) East HS. Izzi impressed at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October and showed top-three-rounds stuff in his first appearance of the spring. He has been a bit inconsistent since while pitching in cold early-season weather in the Midwest.

Izzi has an extremely projectable 6-foot-3 frame and already can reach 97 mph with a four-seam fastball that sits in the low 90s and has modest life. His low-80s slider has good depth and can be a solid offering at its best, but devolves into a slurve when he doesn't stay on top of it. He shows feel for a low-80s changeup with fade that should improve as he uses it more often.

Izzi has a loose arm and a clean delivery that allow him to provide strikes with relative ease. The Wichita State recruit should continue to get better as he gets stronger and it's easy to project him as a starter. His higher arm slot may be more conducive to a curveball than a slider in the long run.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Izzi was a high school teammate of Noah Schultz, now one of the best left-handed pitching prospects in the game after the White Sox took him in the first round of the 2022 Draft. Area scouts stuck around enough to see Izzi, who jumped on radars in his senior season, and it was the Mariners who went all-in, going over slot in the fourth round to sign the right-hander for $1.1 million. Knowing he'd be a bit of a project, the Mariners sent Izzi to make his pro debut in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in 2023 and greatly limited his workload. He advanced to full-season ball in 2024 and was making a solid step in the right direction.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander is just 20 and still has plenty of projection as he continues to fill out his frame. He sits around 94 mph with his fastball and touches as high as 97 with the pitch. He should eventually have an average low-80s slider with good depth, though his higher arm slot makes that choice of breaking balls a little more challenging. There's feel for a changeup as well, though it's behind the other two, with it being a future fringe-average offspeed offering.

Izzi still needs to work on repeating his delivery and finding the strike zone more consistently for him to have a chance to start long-term. It's too early to pull the plug on him fitting into a rotation, but his fastball and slider could add a few ticks if he's pitching in shorter stints out of the pen.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Izzi wowed ahead of the 2022 Draft when area scouts attended one of his high school outings to see a teammate, which prompted the club to do more homework and eventually select the highly projectable righty in the fourth round for over-slot value at $1.1 million, enough to sign him away from his Wichita State commitment.

It’s more upside than floor with the youngster, who didn’t throw competitively the rest of the year after being drafted -- a by-design, health-related effort with the rest of Seattle’s high school pitching selections. He was among the many invited to the club’s high-performance camp, with the goal of putting on more weight and strength.

Beyond conditioning, it’s about throwing more strikes and being consistent, because he can already reach 97 mph with his four-seamer, while sitting in the low-90s with modest life. The heater gives him a far higher ceiling than most his age. His low-80s slider also has good depth and is a pitch he can build upon, though his higher arm slot might be more conducive to a curveball instead. The path to starting long term will require polishing those two pitches, but more so fortifying the changeup, which is still a bit off.

While Noah Schultz, who went in the first round of the 2022 Draft to the White Sox, was sidelined by mononucleosis after his initial two-inning outing, Izzi gave scouts reason to flock to Oswego East HS (Ill.) this past spring. He showed off early-round stuff at at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October and in his first appearance this past spring, and while he was more inconsistent pitching in the cold Midwest weather, he showed enough for the Mariners to take him in the fourth round and give him an over-slot bonus of $1.1 million to sign him away from his Wichita State commitment.
