The son of longtime baseball coach Jim Boeve, who resuscitated the program at NAIA Hastings (Neb.), Mike has gone from a lightly regarded recruit to one of the best contact hitters in the college class. He struck out just nine times in 47 games this spring and has a long track record of producing, including stints in the wood-bat Northwoods and Cape Cod leagues the last two summers. He's expected to become the highest pick in Nebraska-Omaha history, passing two-time All-Star Bruce Benedict (fifth round, 1976).
Boeve has a quick, compact left-handed stroke, tremendous feel for the barrel and a disciplined approach. He rarely swings and misses and concentrates on getting on base. He doesn't do much damage, however, because he has just average raw power and doesn't tap into it, as his swing lacks extension and he generates a lot of groundball contact and mediocre exit velocities.
Boeve's lack of pop puts his profile in question because he has limited defensive options. He has worked hard to get better at third base, where he's adequate and perhaps could become average, though his arm isn't particularly strong. His below-average speed leaves first base and left field as his only other possibilities.

Boeve was one of the best contact hitters in Division I baseball in 2023, ranking fifth among qualifiers with a 4.3 percent K rate and third with a 0.28 K/BB ratio at Nebraska-Omaha. He finished with a .401/.512/.563 slash line over 47 games in his junior spring. Those numbers, along with strong summer performances in the Cape Cod and Northwoods Leagues, pushed Boeve to become the highest UNO player ever drafted when he went in the second round to the Brewers and signed below slot for $1.25 million. He got his feet wet in pro ball with stops in the Arizona Complex and Midwest Leagues.
Batting from the left side, Boeve shows a quick and compact swing that prioritizes putting the ball in play. His ability to focus on balls in the zone helps him build a solid on-base percentage on top of the strong average, and that’s the entire foundation of his offensive profile. Because he does focus so much on protecting the plate over driving the ball with his short swing mechanics, he doesn’t get into his average raw power as much as he could, and his exit velocities suffer. He did tee off with four homers in nine games against less-advanced ACL competition but was back to hitting the ball on the ground 60 percent of the time in his short High-A sample.
A below-average runner, Boeve improved defensively over time at third base in school but still lacked the arm strength to pop there. He was also drafted into the same organization as Brock Wilken, and as a result, the Brewers tried Boeve out more at second in pro ball where his arm is a better fit. His lack of wheels could push him to first or left field in time.
