Dealing with shoulder surgery as a Tennessee high school junior and the pandemic shutdown as a senior, Dickey became depressed and let his weight balloon to 265 pounds. He redshirted while getting into shape during his first year with the Volunteers, losing 60 pounds, then posted a 1.174 OPS in 2022 despite missing a month with a bone bruise in his right foot. Though his numbers haven't been as loud this spring, scouts still consider him one of the best pure hitters in the Southeastern Conference.
Dickey has a busy setup at the plate, crouching while resting the bat on his shoulder before lifting it as he stands up once the pitcher begins his delivery, but he repeatedly barrels balls with a sweet left-handed swing and fine hand-eye coordination. He's not driving the ball in the air as consistently as he did a year ago, leading to some questions about whether he has more than 15-20 homer power. He does a good job of managing the strike zone but makes contact so easily that it cuts into his walk totals.
After a right-hand injury necessitated surgery last fall, Dickey spent the first third of the season playing all three outfield positions before splitting time behind the plate. He'd be more appealing to a team that believes he can catch, though he's a shaky receiver with limited arm strength. A fringy runner out of the batter's box who's quicker once he gets going, he's more likely to be a left fielder at the next level.

After struggling through shoulder surgery and the pandemic as a Tennessee high schooler, Dickey redshirted when he got to the University of Tennessee and righted the ship, getting in excellent shape and posting a 1.174 OPS in 2022. His numbers weren’t as loud the following year, but he hit enough for the Royals to take him in Round 11, signing for an over-slot bonus of $572,500. He was having a solid, albeit unspectacular, first full season when he was sent to the A’s in the package that made Lucas Erceg a Royal.
A left-handed hitter, Dickey has some moving parts at the plate, with a crouch and lifting the bat off his shoulder, but he’s continued to show he can find the barrel and make a ton of contact with a sweet swing and excellent hand-eye coordination. The overall impact is still in question, but he could be a 15-20 homer guy if he can get to driving the ball in the air like he did back in 2022.
While Dickey played all three outfield spots and spent time behind the plate with the Volunteers, he’s given up catching and played right field exclusively this season. For him to profile as a regular in a corner, the power is going to have to come a bit more.

The Royals were able to snag Dickey in the 11th round and paid him fourth-round money with a $527,500 bonus.
