The Padres signed Suero for $325,000 at the start of the 2022 international signing period, and he went out and performed fairly well during his debut in the Dominican Summer League. The move to the United States and the Arizona Complex League was a little bumpier, then he was dealt to the Pirates as part of the return for Rich Hill and Ji Man Choi. He finished up his summer in the Florida Complex League and then got some more work in the Dominican Instructional League.
It's hard to miss Suero, now standing at 6-foot-5 and just starting to grow into that frame. As modest as his numbers have been, it should be noted he was still 16 when he played in the DSL and there’s a ways to go in terms of his physical development. The upside, though, is considerable. A switch-hitter with all the raw tools, he can make hard contact from both sides and has good bat speed, even with his long arms. He’ll need to work on his approach and cut down on the swing-and-miss, but does show some feel for barreling up the baseball out in front.
Suero runs well, too, potentially providing an exciting speed-power combination in the future. That speed gives him a chance to play center field, but he could fill out enough where moving to a corner spot will be necessary. He could take off as he learns how to polish those tools, but just ask O’Neil Cruz: The Pirates know a little bit about helping a tall, lanky and toolsy player reach the big leagues.

Suero began his pro career with the Padres, signing at the start of the 2022 international signing period for $325,000. He showed glimpses of exciting tools during his debut that summer in the Dominican Summer League and was making his United States debut in the Arizona Complex League when San Diego traded him, along with lefty Jackson Wolf and first baseman Alfonso Rivas, for Rich Hill and Ji Man Choi. He finished up his summer in the Florida Complex League.
Suero might has as much raw upside as any offensive player in the Pirates system, other than perhaps Termarr Johnson, but it's all very raw and unpolished at present. He's a long (6-foot-5) switch-hitter with the chance to have an impact on both sides of the ball. He's shown some ability to make quality contact from both sides, with above-average bat speed, despite his long levers. There's some swing-and-miss to clean up, but he has shown some ability to see the ball well out early at times.
An above-average runner, Suero has the chance to stick in center field, but should he fill out his frame, he has the power potential and the arm strength to profile in a corner. There's work to be done in terms of fundamentals and making more contact, but if it clicks, this could be one of those trade steals people talk about years from now.
