Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60 | Overall: 45

Torin joined the Arizona organization in January 2022 and has moved fairly quickly on the strength of some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the entire system. After posting a .465 OBP and 1.85 BB/K ratio over 50 games in the Dominican Summer League in his first taste of the Minors, the infielder shot out of the gate with a .320/.437/.427 line, 21 walks and only nine strikeouts over 26 games in the Arizona Complex League last season, earning a mid-July callup to Single-A Visalia. Results were rougher in the California League, but it was notable that Torin was one of only 16 players to get more than 150 plate appearances at Single-A during their age-18-or-younger season in 2023, joining Top 100 prospects Ethan Salas and Samuel Basallo on that list.

Regardless of level, Torin led all Minor Leaguers in that age bracket (min. 250 PA) with his 13.8 percent strikeout rate, and his 8.8 percent swinging-strike rate at Single-A ranked fourth among players 18 or younger at that level (min. 150 PA). That barrel control has been more about protecting the plate than driving balls in the early going, but there’s hope that the right-handed hitter could get to at least below-average power as he adds more oomph behind his hacks.

The 5-foot-10 infielder has already shown some signs of physical maturation, and he’s trending toward being more of an average runner. He still shows great actions at shortstop, and while he has more than enough arm for the six, he’s gotten some looks at second base, too, because of Arizona’s deep group of middle infielders at the lower levels. Torin profiles as a potential high-contact, high-OBP option at a premium position, and power will be the biggest decider in his future role.

At the start of the 2022 international signing window, eight players got higher bonuses from the D-backs than Torin’s $240,000, but in just one short year, the Venezuela native already looks like the most prominent player of the bunch. The right-handed-hitting middle infielder astoundingly walked 37 times and struck out on only 20 occasions in 50 games in the Dominican Summer League. That not only helped him bat .333 with a .465 OBP, but his 1.85 BB/K ratio ranked fourth among the 1,581 Minor Leaguers with at least 200 plate appearances in 2022.

Arizona officials were instantly taken aback by how well Torin controls the strike zone and showed a mature approach by staying in the zone. He tended to make contact when he swung too, which helped keep the strikeouts low and the average high. While it may be notable that Torin didn’t homer in the DSL, the 5-foot-10 slugger can square balls up, and the D-backs believe at least some pop will come as he adds strength beyond his teen years. His decisions to swing only at balls he can drive certainly helps that case.

One thing evaluators don't have to worry about is his ability to stick at shortstop, even though he got some looks at second. Torin does a good job of getting to balls all over the dirt, and plus arm strength means he can make throws from deep in the hole too. What’s more, Torin was aggressive on the basepaths (21 successful steals in 27 attempts), and with the new rules, he could continue to push the envelope on that side. His advanced approach and strong defensive acumen have already helped push him from the Arizona Complex League to Single-A Visalia in 2023.
