When they signed Tavera in January 2022, his $1.7 million bonus constituted the largest the Orioles had ever given to an international prospect. An alum of the Zorilla Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic, Tavera was one of the more highly coveted players in his class, with a good feel for hitting, emerging power and a plus run tool. He’s shown all of those qualities since entering Baltimore's system, performing well in the Dominican Summer League in his debut and even better in the Florida Complex League in 2023 as an 18-year-old.
Scouts see a potential five-tool prospect in Tavera. A tall and athletic right-handed hitter, he stands out for his smooth swing and advanced approach at the plate at this early stage in his career. His plate discipline and pitch recognition skills enabled him to walk nearly as much as he struck out in the Florida Complex League last summer. Tavera also showed a tendency to get the ball in the air which should result in more power as he continues to fill out physically, and he is already one of the faster players in the system. He did miss some time due to nagging injuries last summer, limiting those will be a goal as he learns how to handle the physical demands of full-season ball in 2024.
Tavera’s speed and athleticism give him a chance to be a plus defender in center field long term, with an average arm that doesn’t hint at a move to the corners. He is skilled enough defensively to handle himself at either if necessary, though. The test of better competition awaits, and if everything clicks, his ceiling could be of a first-division center fielder.

One of the more highly coveted international players in his class, the well-rounded Tavera signed with Baltimore for a then-franchise record $1.7 million in January 2022 after catching the eye of team scouts while training at the Zorilla Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic. He swung the bat well in the Dominican Summer League, showing strong plate discipline and pitch recognition for a young hitter.
Tavera is a right-handed hitter with a smooth and effortless swing, and he has good bat-to-ball skills that complement a solid approach and sound fundamentals. His lean and athletic build produces emerging power that projects as a plus tool if his body continues to develop, and he’s already one of the faster players in the Orioles’ system. Those factors hint at a tantalizing combination of impact speed and power at the highest level.
Defensively, Tavera profiles in center field with a strong chance to stick at the position. But he’s also athletic enough to move around, though his fringy arm might be suited better for left than for right. Like all players his age, Tavera’s skill set and instincts are expected to develop as he gets more experience in pro ball. He has a chance to blossom into a five-tool player if everything clicks.
Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40
One of the more well-rounded international players in the 2021 class, the highly coveted Tavera caught the eye of Orioles scouts while training at the Zorilla Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic. He signed with Baltimore for a franchise-record $1.7 million bonus, the latest signal of continued growth the organization longed to see in Latin America.
Tavera shows a solid approach and sound fundamentals from the right side of the plate, with a good feel for hitting and improving pitch recognition. His swing is smooth and effortless and the bat-to-ball skills are already there. He also features emerging power that projects as a plus tool if his body continues to develop as expected. Indeed, Tavera’s lean and athletic build makes him a strong runner with plenty of room to grow, hinting at the combination of impact speed and power at the highest level.
A right-handed thrower with an average arm, Tavera profiles defensively in center field, with an ability to play all three outfield positions. Like all players his age, Tavera’s skillset and instincts are expected to develop once he enters pro ball. But he has a chance to blossom into a five-tool player with above-average tools across the board.
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55
Tavera is one of the most well-rounded players in this year’s class so it’s no surprise he has a chance to be a five-tool player with above-average grades in the future.
At the plate, the lean and athletic teen shows a good approach and sound fundamentals with improving pitch recognition. He has a good feel for hitting. Like most prospects his age, Tavera’s swing is a work in progress, but he already has good bat-to-ball skills and emerging power that projects to be a plus tool. He can run now, and the run tool is also expected to be a plus tool if he continues to develop at a normal pace.
Tavera trains at the Zorilla Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic. The Orioles are the favorite to sign him.
