Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Born in Venezuela, Gutierrez moved to the Dominican Republic so that he could train at the Amaury Nina Academy that produced Rafael Devers and Eloy Jiménez. He originally planned to wait an extra year and sign with the Nationals, who had more money for him in their 2023 international pool, then changed his mind and joined the Rangers for $1,997,500 in January 2022. He opened last year as the youngest position player (age 18) in the Single-A Carolina League, where he slashed .259/.326/.338 with 30 steals in 78 games while missing time with wrist and finger injuries, as well as time on the developmental list to hone his approach.

Gutierrez is still raw at the plate, which is understandable given his age and aggressive assignment. With his relatively compact right-handed stroke, significant bat speed and projectable strength, he's equipped to hit for average and power but has yet to do so. He has good bat-to-ball skills but presently tinkers too much at the plate, chases too many sliders outside of the zone and produces too much suboptimal ground-ball contact.

Gutierrez has solid speed and plays quicker than that, taking long and gliding strides once underway, while showing aptitude for stealing bases. He gets good reads and jumps in center field and tracks the ball well in all directions. Should he slow down too much as he fills out his 6-foot-3 frame, his plus arm would fit well in right field.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

The Venezuelan-born Gutierrez moved to the Dominican Republic to train at the same Amaurys Nina Academy that spawned Rafael Devers and Eloy Jiménez. He originally planned to sign in 2023 with the Nationals, who could commit more money to him if he waited, before changing his mind and turning pro with the Rangers for $1,997,500 in January 2022. He may have the highest ceiling in the system and played his way to the United States while making his pro debut at age 17 last summer.

Gutierrez could have four plus tools and solid speed when he's fully developed, and he has the instincts and work ethic to hone his physical gifts into skills. He has a compact right-handed swing with plenty of bat speed and projectable strength to produce well above-average raw power once he's fully developed. He's overly aggressive and vulnerable to chasing breaking balls early in his career, but he crushes fastballs and has the aptitude to make adjustments.

Gutierrez plays faster than his solid speed, gliding once he gets going, and he shows promising feel for stealing bases. His good reads and jumps enhance his range in center field, where he's comfortable tracking balls in all directions. He also has plus arm strength that would fit nicely in right field if he slows down as he matures physically and has to move to a corner.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Born in Venezuela, Gutierrez moved to the Dominican Republic to train at the Amaurys Nina Academy, which previously produced Rafael Devers and Eloy Jimenez. One of the better right-handed bats in the 2021-22 international class, he originally planned to wait until 2023 to sign with the Nationals, who could commit more money to him next year. After changing his mind and opting to turn pro with the Rangers for $1,997,500 in January, he made his U.S. debut at age 17 this summer.

Gutierrez could develop into a more athletic version of Jimenez. His bat speed, growing strength and the leverage in his tall frame project to produce well above-average raw power that plays to all fields. More than just a slugger, he repeats his compact swing well and barrels balls consistently while showing good feel for the strike zone.

Presently a solid runner, Gutierrez probably will lose a half-step as he continues to fill out. That may prompt a move from center field, though his instincts may help him stay there. If not, his plus arm and offensive upside will allow him to easily fit the right-field profile.

Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

One of the best right-handed hitters in this year’s class, Gutierrez will be a player to watch once he signs and makes his way through the Minor Leagues.

Originally from Venezuela, Gutierrez moved to the Dominican Republic four years ago to train. He eventually began working out under the guidance of former Minor League and longtime trainer Amaurys Nina at the Amaurys Nina Academy in Santo Domingo. Nina’s former teenage pupils include players like White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez and Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers. and Gutierrez shows similar talent at the same age.

The teen can play center field and has a solid arm, but he could eventually move to a corner outfield position because of his big and growing frame. At the plate, he has a compact and repeatable swing with a knack for barreling up the ball. He shows right-center field power now and the potential to be a plus runner.

The Rangers are the favorite to sign him.
