Though Wagner was a sixth-round pick in 2022, the Dodgers paid the South Carolina prep product their second-highest bonus ($597,500) in that Draft. He hits the ball as hard as anyone in the system but injuries have stymied his progress. He broke his right hamate in 2023 and his left hamate in '24 before staying healthy last season, then missed six weeks with a strained oblique this spring.

A switch-hitter, Wagner makes more contact and does more damage as a lefty. He combines bat speed and strength to provide elite-level exit velocities, has an affinity for turning on pitches and is selling out to launch balls in the air more often this year. He's also chasing and missing more pitches than ever, while his walk rate has plummeted from 15.1 percent in his first four pro seasons to 6.8 percent in 2026.

While Wagner is just a fringy runner, he shows good instincts on the bases and has worked to improve his agility and defense. A high school shortstop, he has focused more on third base and second base as a pro. He has solid arm strength and scores well on the Dodgers' internal defensive metrics, projecting as an above-average gloveman at the hot corner and average at the keystone.

After starring at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October 2021, Wagner moved from suburban Chicago to the P27 Academy (Lexington, S.C.) to face better competition. He thrived and went in the sixth round, where the Dodgers paid him their second-highest bonus ($597,500) in the 2022 Draft. He has barely played as a pro, getting into just 57 games in his first three seasons because he broke his right hamate in 2023 and his left hamate last year.

A switch-hitter, Wagner has a more fluid and contact-oriented stroke from the right side and a more aggressive lefty swing that provides more damage. He arrived in pro ball with more physicality than most prep products, has bat speed to go with his strength and has shown the ability to launch balls to his pull side during his brief action. His 18 extra-base hits and 27 walks in 38 Single-A games last spring hinted at his power potential and on-base ability.

Wagner played shortstop in high school and has seen action at second base this year, but he's better suited for the infield corners. Though he's a fringy runner, he has worked to improve his agility and become a capable defender at third base, though he played more first base last year on a Rancho Cucamonga club with a logjam of infielders. He has the solid arm strength to handle the hot corner and conceivably could try left or right field as well.

A native of suburban Chicago, Wagner made a name for himself at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October 2021 before moving to P27 Academy (Lexington, S.C.) to face better competition as a high school senior last spring. That decision paid off with the Dodgers selecting him in the sixth round and paying him their second-highest bonus ($600,000) in the 2022 Draft. Several area scouts thought he was comparable -- if a little less polished at the plate -- to fellow Palmetto State prep infielder Tucker Toman, who signed with the Blue Jays for $2 million as a supplemental second-rounder. 

A switch-hitter, Wagner has a more direct and fluid swing from the right side but barrels balls regularly as a lefty and righty. More physical than most teenagers, he has the strength and bat speed to develop 20-25 home run power. He also has the feel for hitting and the plate discipline to hit for average as well. 

Wagner played shortstop in high school and immediately moved to third base as a pro while also trying second base in his brief pro debut. With fringy speed and at least solid arm strength, he's a better fit at the hot corner. If that doesn't work out, he should provide enough offensive to profile as a corner outfielder.

Wagner has a similar profile to fellow South Carolina prepster Tucker Toman as a switch-hitter with a chance to hit for average and power who's still seeking a defensive home. Toman is more polished at the plate, so he'll go a round or two earlier than the slightly more athletic Wagner. He played in suburban Chicago before transferring to P27 Academy to face better competition as a high school senior. 

Scouts prefer Wagner's right-handed stroke because it's more direct and less stiff than his left-handed swing. He didn't wow evaluators on the summer showcase circuit, but he performed well at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October and has raked this spring. His ability to barrel balls, along with his strength and bat speed, give him plus raw power. 

A shortstop in high school, Wagner lacks the quickness to play there in pro ball or in college should he fulfill his commitment to Louisville. He's a fringy runner with solid arm strength who could get a chance to play second base and likely fits best at third base. Even if he winds up in the outfield, he could provide enough offense to profile as a regular.
