Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

Hagaman redshirted his freshman year at West Virginia and pitched out of the bullpen the next two years before undergoing internal brace surgery late in May 2024. The Rangers took him in the fourth round two months later and signed him for $515,000. Hagaman made his Minor League debut in the Arizona Complex League as a starter in June 2025, got five Single-A starts after that and was traded to the D-backs as part of the Merrill Kelly deal at the Deadline. He rose to High-A after joining Arizona and ended his adventurous year with 12 more innings in the Arizona Fall League.

Standing 6-foot-4, Hagaman generates elite extension down the mound and repeatedly exceeded the seven-foot mark in the AFL. That would help his 93-95 mph fastball play up as is, but he also gets really good induced vertical break on the heater, ranging from 16-20 inches. The D-backs believe there might be another tick or two of velo to be found the further he gets from elbow surgery and rehab too. Hagaman increased the use of his 82-85 mph curveball after the trade, and it flashed strong depth and sweep. There’s a tighter, slightly harder gyro slider too, and his 86-89 mph changeup flashes average with good drop compared to the four-seamer.

Hagaman walked only 6.1 percent of his Minor League batters faced in his first pro season, though that climbed to 13.5 percent in the desert. He relied on a lot of low-level batters chasing his stuff outside the zone to get there, and it’s a safe bet that’ll happen less against more disciplined hitters. Hagaman still needs to take on longer workloads, both in games and over the course of a season, and how everything holds up will determine his future place in an MLB rotation.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45

Hagaman redshirted in his first season at West Virginia and compiled 73 1/3 innings over the next two years, mostly as a reliever, before injuring his elbow last April. Though he had internal brace surgery a month later, the Rangers still selected him in the fourth round of the 2024 Draft. They used him as a starter when he debuted in the Minors in June and traded him to the D-backs as part of the Merrill Kelly deal at this year’s Deadline.

Hagaman’s promising three-pitch mix begins with a 92-94 mph fastball that climbs as high as 98 with plenty of carry and armside run. His best strikeout pitch with the Mountaineers was a tight mid-80s slider that he threw nearly as often as his heater. Considering his relief background and inexperience, he shows surprising aptitude for throwing a mid-80s changeup with fade.

An athletic mover with a 6-foot-4 frame and loose arm, Hagaman gets down the mound well and creates plenty of extension. To make it as a starter, he’ll have to improve his control after battling the strike zone in college and in summer ball. He’ll also have to prove that he can hold up and maintain his stuff while handling a rotation workload.
