Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Signed by the Brewers for an over-slot $255,900 as a 14th-round pick out of a Nevada high school in 2021, Avina won the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League MVP award and home run title (10 in 36 games) in his pro debut the next summer. The Yankees acquired him and fellow outfield prospect Brian Sanchez in a November 2023 trade for Jake Bauers. After a torn labrum ended his 2024 season a month early and required offseason surgery on his left shoulder, he split last year between High-A (.295/.412/.506) and Double-A (.224/.314/.341).

Avina's carrying tool is his plus raw power from the right side of the plate, which mostly plays to his pull side. He doesn't sell out for home runs, rarely chasing pitches as he waits for ones he can drive in the air to left field. Though he has improved his selectivity, he still has issues making reliable contact because he struggles to catch up to in-zone fastballs.

Avina has lost some quickness as he has added strength and is now an average runner who doesn't make much of an impact on the bases. He split his time between all three outfield positions in 2025, and he's an average defender on the corners whose range is a bit stretched in center. He features solid to plus arm strength and has a knack for throwing out baserunners.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

After the Brewers signed him for an over-slot $255,900 as a 14th-round pick from a Nevada high school in 2021, Avina broke into pro ball by winning the MVP award and home run crown (10 in 36 games) in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League the following summer. He wasn't as productive in Single-A in 2023, and Milwaukee traded him and fellow outfield prospect Brian Sanchez to the Yankees in exchange for Jake Bauers in November 2023. Avina's numbers dipped further last year, but he has rebounded in 2025 and earned a promotion to Double-A in July.

Avina's most attractive attribute is his plus raw power from the right side of the plate. He looks to do damage, patiently waiting for pitches he can drive in the air to his pull side. He has been more selective this season, though he still has issues making consistent contact, even against pitches in the zone.

Avina has slowed a bit as he has filled out and is now an average runner. He can steal an occasional base and play all three outfield spots, though he's better suited for right field than center. He has solid arm strength and consistently has thrown out baserunners throughout his pro career.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

A Nevada high school product, Avina planned on staying home to play at the University of Nevada, Reno until the Brewers gave him sixth-round money ($255,900) as a 14th-rounder in 2021. He broke into pro ball the following summer by winning Arizona Complex League MVP accolades and topping the Rookie-level circuit with 10 homers in 36 games before going deep five times in 28 Single-A contests at the end of his age-19 season. He slashed .233/.373/.442 in Single-A last year before the Yankees acquired him and fellow outfield prospect Brian Sanchez in exchange for Jake Bauers in November.

Avina offers huge raw power from the right side of the plate and can crush balls to his pull side. He's overly aggressive and expands his strike zone while hunting home runs, which resulted in a 31.6 percent strikeout rate in his first two pro seasons. He did use the opposite field more often and made some progress with his plate discipline in 2023, but he'll have to continue to improve and make more adjustments to succeed against upper-level pitching.

With solid speed and arm strength to match, Avina can steal a few bases and play anywhere in the outfield. He has more range than a typical corner outfielder and is more of an average defender in center field. He spent the majority of his time in left field in 2023 and registered 13 assists in 91 starts between all three outfield spots.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

Avina was committed to playing at the University of Nevada when the Brewers selected him in the 14th round in 2021 and signed him for sixth-round money with a $255,900 bonus. He won Arizona Complex League MVP honors in his 2022 pro debut after leading the Rookie-level circuit with 10 homers in 36 games before going deep five times in 28 Single-A contests at the end of that season. In 2023, Milwaukee shipped him and fellow outfield prospect Brian Sanchez to the Yankees to acquire Jake Bauers in November.

Avina shows double-plus raw power from the right side, and he’s capable of crushing some absolute moonshots to the pull side. It’s that slugging potential that made him command the attention of scouts and fans alike in his first taste of the Minors. What soured many was that the blasts came with more-than-unhealthy strikeout rates around 35 percent. The right-handed slugger would get swing-happy in search of his next dinger and expand the zone so much that he would still punch out when pitchers wouldn’t dare throw him a strike. He’s improved the strikeout rate slowly in 2023 but not enough yet to project for better than a 40-grade bat at this stage.

A 6.7 60-yard runner in high-school showcases, Avina should keep enough speed to feature well at all three outfield spots. He spent more time on the corners in 2023, partly in deference to Luis Lara, but he picked up 12 outfield assists from left and right, highlighting how his arm can work out there. There is a wide chasm of outcomes for the Nevada native, all depending on his contact rate.
