Amick spent the first two years of his college career at Clemson, barely playing as a freshman, then being stuck in a DH/first-base role once he finally got a shot to play as a sophomore. After a strong showing in the Cape Cod League, the son of former NASCAR driver Lyndon Amick transferred to Tennessee, where he hit 23 homers and helped the Volunteers win the College World Series. The Twins bought the power potential in the second round, signing him with a full-slot $1.45 million bonus and letting him get his feet wet with Single-A For Myers.
With bat speed and plenty of strength, Amick’s offensive calling card entering pro ball was his plus raw power and ability to get to it to all fields. Though he can be very aggressive at the plate and often chased pitches out of the zone in college, he showed he could routinely barrel up the baseball, and the Twins were pleased during his pro debut that to see him do a better job at laying off bad secondary stuff, showing better pitch recognition than anticipated.
The other question surrounding Amick is whether he will be able to stick at the hot corner, which he finally got to play with the Volunteers. Though he’s a below-average runner with fringy-to-average defensive tools, the Twins are bullish on that part of his game as well after seeing him make solid strides in his brief time with the organization.

The son of former NASCAR driver Lyndon Amick, Billy barely played as a freshman or in the first month of his sophomore season at Clemson. After the Tigers inserted him in their lineup last March, he batted .413/.464/.772 and then continued to rake in a brief stint in the Cape Cod League. Unhappy with being limited to DH and first base by the Tigers, he sought an opportunity to play third base and transferred to Tennessee, where he became one of the most dangerous hitters in the Southeastern Conference and helped the Volunteers win their first College World Series championship, though he slumped a bit down the stretch and ended up landing with the Twins in the second round, who signed him for full slot.
Amick has a quality right-handed swing and repeatedly barrels balls despite frequently chasing pitches out of the strike zone. His aggressive approach yields hard contact to all fields but does cut into his walk totals. His bat speed and strength create plus raw power that plays all over the ballpark and could translate into 20-25 homers per season.
Amick has gotten the chance to man the hot corner for the Volunteers and looks like he'll be able to stay there in pro ball. Equipped with below-average speed and quickness along with average arm strength, he's a fringy-to-average third baseman who has looked more comfortable as he has gained more experience. He does have the work ethic to continue to improve but also may wind up at first base.
