Scouting Report

2026

When Fernandez signed with the D-backs as a 17-year-old out of Venezuela in February 2021, it was a positive sign that the organization skipped him over the Dominican complex and sent him straight stateside for his first official Minor League action. However, it took some time for him to pop off offensively in the Minors, and that finally came in 2025 when he hit .272/.321/.454 in 122 games for Double-A Amarillo. His 17 homers in the Texas League were more than double that of his four previous seasons combined (13). Arizona protected him from the Rule 5 Draft with a 40-man roster spot in the offseason.

Now, Amarillo is widely known as one of the most hitter-friendly places in the Minors, but to his credit, Fernandez did show positive signs of growing into his 6-foot-3 frame and adding the strength to become a bigger power threat. He mashed particularly against lefties with a .511 slugging percentage and .888 OPS in 147 plate appearances against them, but he was much more vulnerable to spin from same-side arms.

Just an average runner, Fernandez gets himself in the right positions defensively at shortstop with good instincts and he has at least above-average arm strength. After dalliances at every other spot on the dirt, he’s become one of the best defensive shortstops in the entire Arizona system. That was a big reason why the D-backs didn’t want to risk losing him in the Rule 5 process, but unless he improves against righties, he’s still trending toward a bench infielder who can occasionally start against southpaws.
