Paez has exhibited the best control in Boston's system and some of the best in the Minors since signing for $450,000 out of Venezuela in 2021. He has compiled a 3.25 ERA and 4 percent walk rate while conquering four levels in his first four years as a pro. He had his best season yet in 2024, ranking second in the Minors in K/BB ratio (9.4) and third in walk rate (3 percent) among pitchers with 90 or more innings.

While Paez still has below-average fastball velocity, his heater has moved from sitting at 85 mph in his pro debut to 88 in 2022 to 90 in 2023 and to 91 last year, peaking at 94. It works because of his precise command and ability to run four-seamers up in the zone or sink two-seamers at the knees. He used his solid low-80s slider more than his fastball in 2024, and it moves significantly in the opposite direction. His best pitch is his low-80s changeup, which fades and dives at the plate.

Paez operates from a low three-quarters slot with a flat approach angle, adding life and deception to his offerings. He pounds the strike zone with all three of them and has uncanny feel for mixing pitches and locations. He's not very physical and his arm action may be better suited for relieving, but he could wind up as a back-of-the-rotation starter if he keeps proving himself.

Paez signed for $450,000 out of Venezuela in 2021 and broke into pro ball by winning Red Sox Latin program pitcher of the year honors that summer. He has performed well at his first four stops in the system and is enjoying his best year yet in 2024. He has handled a June promotion to High-A with aplomb and ranks among the best strike-throwers in the Minors.

Paez's fastball sat at 85 mph in his pro debut, then averaged 88 in 2022 and 90 last year before ticking up to 90-92 this year. He's still able to succeed with his heater because he can command it where he wants, run it up in the zone or sink it at the knees. He has a pair of solid secondary pitches that keep hitters off his fastball, an upper-70s curveball with good depth and a low-80s changeup that fades and dives.

Working out of a low three-quarters arm slot with a flat approach angle, Paez adds life and deception to his arsenal. He pounds the strike zone with all of his offerings and has advanced feel for mixing pitches and locations. He's already intriguing as a potential back-of-the-rotation starter, and if he could boost his fastball velocity a little bit more, he'd be even more interesting.
